Natchez Trace / PARK CARRY Bills Update

Post by 94LEVERFAN on Wed Feb 24, 2010 11:25 am

SB2153 has passed senate and is probably STUCK in house JUD B committee. Lots of liberals on it and in charge of it. We need to light this committee up if this is going to pass. I have talked to my rep (Phillip Gunn of Clinton) he is not on the committee but is trying to talk to members and get something going. This is the last bill dealing with this still alive. Deadline for action is Tuesday. If not out of committee by then it is DEAD until next session. Come on folks, CALL YOUR REPRESENATIVE TODAY! Next week will be too late. I would really like to be legal to carry on the Trace, wouldnt y'all? Thanks, Bruce. Call me if questions. 601-906-4678.

Here is what I sent to EACH of them --
----------------------------------------------------

Dear Representive (NAME) & Members of Judiciary B Committee:

Your Committee is currently debating SB 2153. I beg of you not to let this bill die in your Committee. This Bill deserves the right to be debated and voted on by all Members of the House. This Bill passed with overwhelming support in the Senate.

As you are aware, the US Congress passed a Bill which would permit firearms carry in our National Parks and the Bill was signed by the President of the United States. With passage of SB 2153, Mississippians can enjoy the same benefits granted by the new National Law.

There is absolutely no reason I can think of that would preclude you for voting this Bill out of Committee. Again, I urge you to put Mississippians first and ahead of any political in-fighting or special interest.

I, along with many, many others, will be watching with great interest your actions regarding this Bill. I appreciate your time, and look forward to seeing this Bill emerge from the Committee.

Got this back from Mark Duval (D) this afternoon --
----------------------------------------------
Ted, I am hopeful that this bill will pass out of committee. I will support this bill in committee and on the House floor. Since my district runs the length of the Natchez Trace Parkway from Tupelo to the Alabama state line, I understand the need to transport firearms through National Parks as garanteed by the 2nd Amendment to the US constitution.

Thanks for your email Mike. I am on the committee, but can not assure you the Chairman would allow it to come out of the committee. I was Chairman for years, and i certainly sympathize with your possession.

Jeff Smith

We need everyone to email the Chairman!!

Let's get it done!

The responce I got back from Mark Duvall:

Matt, I am hopeful that this bill will pass out of committee also, however many on the committee have expressed their concern for allowing firearms in parks. I will support this bill in committee and on the House floor. Since my district runs the length of the Natchez Trace Parkway from Tupelo to the Alabama state line, I understand the need to transport firearms through National Parks as garanteed by the 2nd Amendment to the US constitution.

OK Guys -- we can make this happen if we get off our backsides and just send a couple emails NOW!! We need to send one to the Committe Chairman and Vice-Chairman -- here is their email address and what I sent to them this morning ..

wbailey@house.ms.gov
bevans@house.ms.gov

(Dear Chairman Bailey:) (Dear Vice-Chairman Evans:)

I understand from several other members of your Committee (JudB) that this Bill has not yet been reported out of your Committee. This Bill deserves a vote by the Full House and you can make that happen.

The law abiding folks here in Mississippi deserve the benefit of the new Federal Law that permits the lawful carry of firearms within National Parks, i.e., the Natchez Trace. Please do not deprive us of this right.

Two emails is all I ask!!!!!

NRA-ILA email today.

Urgent: Right-to-Carry Reform Legislation Needs Your Help in Mississippi!

Please Contact Your State Representative!

You may have read about the new federal law that took effect February 22 that allows concealed carry permit holders to carry firearms for protection in national parks and wildlife refuges. However, this important change will not take effect in Mississippi because state law currently prohibits the possession of firearms in parks and the new federal law would not preempt any state ban.

The Mississippi Senate recently passed Senate Bill 2153, an NRA-supported bill repealing the prohibition on permit holders carrying in parks -- so that the new federal law would apply in Mississippi -- and rolling back many other restrictions on where permit holders can lawfully carry, including private businesses such as restaurants and public buildings that have court rooms and other government offices. However, this important legislation remains stuck in the House Judiciary B Committee.

The deadline for the committee to act on this bill is Tuesday, March 2.

It is critical that you contact your State Representative and respectfully urge him or her to support this important legislation. Please ask them to urge the House Speaker Billy McCoy and House Judiciary B Committee Chairman Willie Bailey to allow the house to vote on this critical bill.
