cant make a decision.. i want them all.

Post by bensand26 on Mon Mar 15, 2010 4:20 am

i am about to buy my first handgun.. and i have the money, i just do not know what to get. i like every gun. most feel good in my hands, except real small bug guns. i want one for car/home/farm carry. i do not know what i would like though. my problem seems to be that too many catch my interest. its the worst/best problem to have. anyone else have this problem? or solutions? let the discussion begin. any ideas are welcome. thanks.

Does anyone else have this problem. Everytime I go to work on Saturdays at Hunters Haven, Gunshows, any other gunshop, look online, read about a new gun. So yes your not alone with your problem. Unfortunately it gets worse/ better as you ad to your collection!

The best advice I can give is shoot as many as can from friends or family members, and make mental notes on what feels best in your hands, and that you shoot well naturally. By that I mean it's one that points well for you and that you can work controls somewhat naturally. With something like that as your skills improve with practice you'll kind of be ahead of the curve a little bit.

I was able to narrow it down to DA/SA guns. That really cut down on the number of guns that I allow myself to get excited over.
My EDC gun now is my Sig SP2022 40 cal. Sigs are usually higher priced guns but this one is along the lines of an XD and I got it on sale at Bud's.
Find something about guns that you like as I did and that will help you narrow your choices. Do your homework by researching the guns you are interested in by asking specific questions here about the gun. Read reviews about them. Some ranges will have rentals so try to find one to shoot. Try to meet up with someone here who has what you like and shoot theirs.
Good luck and be safe!

i love my PPS .40... it is a great, concealable pistol. it just disappears on me. and it shoots good! little snappy, but any small .40 is gonna be.

it is one of the first concealed carry pistol i would consider as far as automatics go.

If you are really considering one for "farm carry," a good .357 or .45 would be good! You can get the shotshells for them to handle snakes! I believe those two calibers carry the highest payload of shot!

What you need is a 686+ 4" barrel.

Depends on your preference.
Auto: You can get a RIA Tactical 1911 for about $430
SA Revolver: hard to beat a .357 Blackhawk
DA Revolver:The 686 Xd357 suggested is a good choice.

Plan on coming to the Meet&Greet and ask folks to bring what interest you. That should help narrow it down. I know I've got several I can bring for you to wring out.

Maybe you should give some consideration to a couple of basic questions and see if one means more to you than the other. Is there a particular platform that you'd like more for your new gun, ie. semi-auto or revolver? Is there a caliber that you're really itching for (9mm, 40, 45, 38/357)? If you want to be able to go out and shoot it a bunch, the 38/357 ammo is not going to be attractive. 9mm and 40 will pretty much put you in the semi-auto, 38/357 in a revo and 45 can be had in both. There are some very impressive 45 acp revolvers by Smith and Taurus and Ruger has the convertible Blackhawk that has cylinders for 45acp & LC. Just some thoughts...

+2 to XD357 suggestion. 686 or 66 in a 4" model.
Other than that, U know what I would suggest.........

i was thinking about trading my new savage 17 hmr. its a model 93 with the accutrigger and bushnell scope. plus a little cash ($75) at the laurel gun show(march 27 and 28). with that in mind what gun should i get. let me try to narrow it down for yall.

first off, i would rather get a used one first.

i do not know about a revolver or auto.
i have not thrown a 22 out of the equation, 9mm, or 45acp
in an auto i like DAO (like a glock). or a single action like a (1911).
in a revolver i like SA or DA. i shoot both well.
I want one large enough to shoot well and be accurate, but not a huge hand cannon (full size 1911 would be the max size). no buntline revolvers.

thanks.

Unfortunately (and some here may disagree), you're not likely to get much of a trade on the 17 from any of the dealers. You may find someone walking around who would make you a trade if they had a handgun you wanted but you may be better off listing it on here and seeing if you can get any offers. IMHO

My take on a 22 is this… for plinking and shooting squirrels and other SMALL animals and targets they are great! However, a 22 is NOT adequate to protect you in the event you need it too, be it from people or animal attacks… a few weeks back I posted up about finding a pack of wild dogs on our farm. 2 broke off from the pack and came at me. I had a 22 rifle in my hands. I shot one, and hit it, twice. luckily, it changed its mind and retreated, but the 22 did NOT put it down. That makes a 22 UNACCEPTABLE to me for protection. If it wont kill a wild dog that is charging me, it is NOT going to put down a crazed junkie loaded up on meth looking to do my wife, kids, or me harm. Therefore, I never leave home without an ADEQUATE side arm now (being my 40, and now a 44 mag I just got). I just would NOT trust my life to a 22 PERIOD…

That said, I had a p-22 pistol that I had bought to use for target practice thinking, I can practice with it, and then fine tune with the 40… nope, I am dead shot with the p-22 and group to the left with my 40. I now recognize the need to practice with what I carry only…

Keep in mind, these are conclusions I have come from MY OWN experiences and only apply to ME DIRECTLY… you may have other experiences.

now maybe a glock or 1911 with a 22 conversion... that may work, as long as the trigger pull and feel is identical.

I agree with Joe 110% on this one. Don't bring a chiwawa to rottweiler fight. Protecting ones self and family is too important of a job to halfass it.

I love blasting away with my 40..
I tried to hit a 20" gong at 400yds with it yesterday. I got close lol

Sounds like you could use a 357 revo, decent size barrel roughly 6". If you want a farm carry. my dad has a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44mag and its a handful. He has killed a many a deer with it also. Accurate? YES..

I see your age says your 18. You have to be 21 to buy a handgun. Sad
