My use for a .22 rf handgun is target shooting. I prefer the Ruger Mark II 6-7/8" Target Pistol. All the other pistols in this price range are inferior to the Ruger. If you go to a pistol match, you will never see a good shooter using Berettas neos ofr the [plastic framed S&W .22's. The Ruger needs a bit of tweaking to make their performance optimum. The magazines have to be adjusted for the best feeding and the trigger should be lightene. Also the trigger stop needs to be set so there is no after travel in the trigger.

I've always been a fan of the Ruger Single Six...carried one on my trap lines back in the mid 70's and early 80's. Good revolvers.

Preferred 22 Handgun

Post by Ed Hunter on Sun Feb 14, 2010 2:34 pm

I'm using a Ruger 22/45 simply because I'm prejudiced toward the 1911 platform and, barring a .22 conversion, this Ruger is more or less similar in set up. I find it reliable and reasonably accurate. At least ir's a lot cheaper than .45ACP!

Speaking of 1911 platforms, I have a 9mm STI, 1911 platform, ordered right now. Waiting in great anticipation. Anyone have any first hand experience with STI handguns?

Ruger Single Six is a great 22 revolver. If you can find an older one a K22 is a very nice shooting 22 revolver

Preferred 22 Handgun

Post by Ed Hunter on Tue Feb 16, 2010 11:10 am

I wrote a couple of days ago, "I'm using a Ruger 22/45 ..."

Let me add a caveat.

This pistol has a bull barrel with an OD of about 7/8" (take a look at: http://www.ruger.com/index.html?r=firearms, and click your way to this pistol).

The front sight is attached by a single small bolt. Not good. It tends (at least in my case) to work loose. You can imagine the disquiet on the range!

Have solved the problem with some loctite. Seems to be holding.

Re; Ruger 22/45 – MORE

Over the past couple weeks or so I’ve made a couple posts in this forum thread on the Ruger 22/45.

On 2/14 I posted, “I'm using a Ruger 22/45 simply because I'm prejudiced toward the 1911 platform and, barring a .22 conversion, this Ruger is more or less similar in set up. I find it reliable and reasonably accurate. At least it’s a lot cheaper than .45ACP!”

And then added on 2/16, “Let me add a caveat. This pistol has a bull barrel with an OD of about 7/8"…The front sight is attached by a single small bolt. Not good. It tends (at least in my case) to work loose. You can imagine the disquiet on the range! Have solved the problem with some loctite. Seems to be holding.”

Was out to the range again this morning, early – low 40’s, sunny, calm. In other words, ‘nice’.

Pasted below (I hope) is a sample of what the 22/45 can do.

This 5 shot group is at 50 feet, from the bench. The 4-shot in-line group is roughly an inch across. The flyer to the lower left is about 1 1/8 inches below that linear group. Considering that’s shot from 73-year old hands, I think that demonstrates what the 22/45 can do, and does relatively consistently.

I like the Ruger Super Single Six, and the MKII and MKIII's
The Buckmarks are nice too. My favorite is the Smith & Wesson model 41.

I've shot a lot of 22s over the years and I personally prefer the Rugers. The single six or the MK series will last longer than you will. It really is a small price for a firearm that will undoubtedly last a lifetime. You also mentioned that you would like something to keep in your vehicle. For this I'd recommend the Walther P22. It's a tiny pistol that operates like a big pistol. This makes it great for the glove box. Although, I can't comment on the quality of the P22. I don't have that much experience with them.

I'll take all of the ones listed. Ya'll can supply me the ammo necessary to fully test and report back on what works and what doesn't. Sounds good to me! thumbs up
