H&R Handi Rifle
Does anyone know anything about changing the barrel on a handi rifle? I have one in .308 and would like to get another barrel for it in .444 or 45-70. I heard that you have to send the gun to H&R and it takes a while to get it back. Also any suggestions on the caliber I have shot the .444 it is ok how is the 45-70?

You have to send everything but the barrel you have now back to H&R to get it done.
Since Remington bought them, I have heard turn around times have gotten really long. Check out Graybeard Outdoors forum http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/index.php they have a big section just for the Handi Rifles and ask around, somebody will able to help you.
I don't know much about the .444 but I really like the 45/70 I've had a couple of Handi Rifles in 45/70.

The 444 shoots flatter than the 45/70, but still hits with authority. It's legal to use during muzzle loader season for Whitetail. It would make good Hog medicine too.
You do have to send your rifle sans current barrel back to have it fitted. I have heard the same thing about turn around times since Remington bought them.

The 444 ain't no slouch! It is a 44 mag on mega dose steroids. Good selection of factory rounds available including the Leverloution. If you send it now it will be back before deer season.

Ruger Go to that GBO site that bubbat suggested and read the FAQ'S. They are really interesting. I have purchased a few barrels from members on the forum. Thay are actually easy to fit. My favorite of all the Handies is the 45 70. I have a few of the Handies, but the 45 70 is always with me at the range.. It's a hoot to shoot!

I sent mine off to them a few years back and it took 5-7 weeks if I remember right.
I vote 444 it is a bad dude

Another vote for .444. The only 45/70 handi I've shot was the syn and it kicked hard.

1 more for the 444. You can fit the barrel yourself if you are the slightest bit mechanically inclined. And you only need to ship your receiver. They don't have to have any of the furniture.

The H&R website says ship everything but the old barrel. I sent everything when I had it done.
"Carefully package the stock, forend and frame (receiver) for shipping. (DO NOT SHIP YOUR EXISTING BARREL.)"

One word "Limbsaver"! They work wonders on keeping ones shoulder intact. I shot with one on an 870 with slugs and buckshot. Boy what difference it made. No Bruise at all.

Does anyone other than Remington manufacture .444 ammo? In this day and time, something to consider.

Hornady, Federal, and possibly Winchester. First two for sure. We have the Hornady at Hunters Haven. I want to say a 265gr. Lever Revolution ammo. Don't quote me on the bullet weight, but I know the ammo is there.

Re: H&R Handi Rifle
At least the Hornady and Remington are less than $50 per 20.
Then there's:
Grizzly Ammunition 444 Marlin 300 Grain PUNCH Box of 20
Product #: 889106
Status: Out of Stock, Backorder OK
Our Price $97.99
Looks like 5 manufacturers, 3 of whom are Cor-bon, Grizzly & Buffalo Bore.
At least there are now more options in factory ammo.

My handi LOVES hornady and remington both. I'm not so fond of the hornady myself

The remington's didn't expand on a doe dad shot so he changed to the hornadys. They worked fine this year on his buck.
