Lets Talk About Mausers

Who has the best price on them? Do you like them or not? What do you like, what do you dislike about them? Rebarrel to a 308, keep the military configuration [my favorite] or sporterize?

I do not own one......yet.

I really like my M24/47 Yugo Mauser. My Yugo Mauser is still original and will stay that way....... Heck, it still has some cosmoline in it.

Go with the 8mm (8x57) Mausers. There is something about sending 196-198gr FMJ bullets downrange that makes you feel all fuzzy and warm inside............

I have a friend that has the nazi emblems, one a nazi youth rifle, not sure how you can tell (he lives in Texas so I have not seen them). I don't want anything to do with anything with nazi markings unless it was a war trophy taken by a family member.
Other than that, they are nice rifles.

Get a Swedish Model 1896 in 6.5x55mm. I wrote a book on the Swedes and I have extensively tested them. They are the most accurate mausers available.

I have a Spanish Mauser Model 98 8x57mm that a friend wants to sell. Let me know if you want info.

Doug, I have no clue about Mausers. That's why I made the post. Wanting to get my feet wet before jumping in.

Have always heard praise about a Mauser action or the extractor.

I have seen one rebarreled for 308 and sporterized. I would have liked it better to have stayed original military configuration. Must admit it being in 308 was interesting. Reasoning it would not add another caliber to have to stock or reload for.

Also have heard alot of good about the Swedes surplus being really well kept weapons.

When I think Mauser only German came to mind. How many countries made them? Since you mentioned the Spanish your friend has.

I have just recently become interested in these guns. In fact I have 3 guns and one action headed my way right now. I have been reading everything about them that I can get my hands on. My original idea was to sporterize one, but it depends on their condition. I might just use the action for my next project.

How many countries actually manufactured Mausers? here is my guess:

There may be a few more but I can't think of them right now.

Thgere were many more Countries that used them in their military but they did not actually manufacture them. Even the USA used a Mauser. The 1903 Springfield was a Mauser that was modified. It was so much a Mauser, that the US Government had to pay Mauserwerke royalties for patent infringement. Here are some of the Nationas that used Mauser rifles:

Damn, thats a lot of countries. I would think the Mauser could give the AK a run for it's money on #'s manufactured.

What a list. Never dreamed it was something like that. Did know about the U.S. having to pay but have never see one of the weapons we made.

Picking one will be a major undertaking if like me only want one for the collection.

Looked a some today at the fun show. One's tag said 6.5 the others were 8's. Priced under 3 bills the ones I looked at.

This is going to take more study than I thought.

that Aim Surplus is selling?

I have collected and shot them for years, after Katrina I sold most of my collection in the new house process. I have acquired a couple since then, a 24/47 in the grease and a matching 1908 Brazilian with a mirror bore, receiver still in the white. I like them.

For what it's worth, if you are interested in a VZ 24 with the crest still on it, it looks like Classic Arms has them. The ones at Aim Surplus have the crests removed.

Thanks for the info. Those at classic arms do look nice. I have been thinking about getting one, they look like they would be a fun one to shoot and I have seen the ammo for sale at a reasonable price. Anybody else have an 8mm they like to shoot?

I have a k98, Vz24, m48 and 24/47. 8mm to the rest of the world is like 3006 to us. Here in the States they load the commercial 8mm ammo really mild. Best round I've found for hunting is the Sellier & Bellot 196gr SP. I also have two Swedish Mausers a m96 and m38

Something I've never understood. Removing the crest on imported surplus. With Japanese rifles it's the same story.

Sometimes they are ground of, left rough and in the white. I've seen it many times, and it messes up an otherwise fine example of a particular rifle.
