223 lake city brass

I have a load worked up with federal brass that groups wonderful and it groups the same with lc brass . but im shooting max loads already and the lc brass has decreased case capacity . One gun smith told me aslong as im not splitting cases and blowing out primers im fine . the only affect it has on my AR 15 is they make me have to clean it every 100 rounds. I have about 6 pounds of lake city brass . how bad am im messing up shooting these loads in an AR?

What loads are you shooting?

A max load doesn't necessarily mean you have to clean it every 100 rounds.

I shoot over a max load of Varget in my service rifle and don't clean it until I have fired at least 500 rounds but it can go more.

Why are you loading and shooting max loads? Too scary to me! One little hiccup and you've got problems! I don't see a great enough velocity gain to justify the risk. Besides, if I want a rifle that shoots flatter, I will buy a more appropriate weapon.

Agree entirely with the above post ... what load are your using. Of course some powders are a little dirtier than others but not to the degree you are saying (100 rounds) .... You may find that the max load may not really be as "max" as you believe in that if it is leaving alot of unburnt powder, that is a waste of good powder.

I, too, use Varget most often in my AR loads. With a heavy load of Varget, the powder is compressed due to the limited .223 case volume.

Again, what is the load you are using? Maybe we can assist.

U have a seperate thread on here stating that you are having fiits loading 223 and you are loading MAX?

What chamber does your rifle have?

A wylde or 5.56 chamber is a little more forgiving than a .223 chamber.

26 grains of varget with a 69 grain nosler . the max book load is wat makes one hole groups in my gun. maybe i do shoot more than 100 rounds between cleaning 250 sounds better if you add in the factory rounds i shoot

what primer?
What the COL?
What do the primers look like (that is very very important)?
flat or cratered primers are a bad thing.


You should chronograph these if they are hitting that good. If you dont have one you are welcome to use mine.
Does the LC brass have a nato cross? I have found the non-nato cases do not hold up that well. Primer pockets loosen up (LC 08). I reload it once (with a CCI 450, 25gr WC844/H335, 55gr crimped with cannelure barely visable) and leave it on the ground.
