Congrats on the Hunter! I had one and put a Tasco Pro-Point red dot on it. What a fun little pistol it was. Let it go in a moment of weakness.

I made this post to the “prefered .22 handgun?” thread 3/5/10. It seems to fit in here too.

On 2/14 I posted, in that thrwead. “I'm using a Ruger 22/45 simply because I'm prejudiced toward the 1911 platform and, barring a .22 conversion, this Ruger is more or less similar in set up. I find it reliable and reasonably accurate. At least it’s a lot cheaper than .45ACP!”

On 2/16 I added to that thread,, “Let me add a caveat. This pistol has a bull barrel with an OD of about 7/8"…The front sight is attached by a single small bolt. Not good. It tends (at least in my case) to work loose. You can imagine the disquiet on the range! Have solved the problem with some loctite. Seems to be holding.”

Was out to the range again this morning (that was 3/5), early – low 40’s, sunny, calm. In other words, ‘nice’.

Pasted below (I hope) is a sample of what the 22/45 can do.

This 5 shot group is at 50 feet, from the bench. The 4-shot in-line group is roughly an inch across. The flyer to the lower left is about 1 1/8 inches below that linear group. Considering that’s shot from 73-year old hands, I think that demonstrates what the 22/45 can do, and does relatively consistently.

I've tried that with my wife and she didn't buy it.

You should buy the 22/45 if you like the 1911 feel.

Ruger Longevity


(You can sure tell I’ve got time on my hands this morning waiting to go to church!)

I guess I can squeeze this into this discussion topic. There is a little relevance - Ruger Longevity.

This picture, from June, 2009, shows my grandson shooting a .22 Ruger at the Albuquerque Municipal Shooting Range (check it out at: www.cabq.gov/openspace/shootingrange.html).

Well that particular .22 Ruger was given to my by my mom in the spring/summer of 1962. That makes it going on 50 years old. Still functions like new. And still is very clean.

My daughter (and g-sons) have it now.

How do you like that facility? Pretty nice. Have shot there a couple of times.

Be careful!! I'm not sure there is enough room there for rimfire shooting!!


I've got a 22/45 and Walther P22 to teach my son on.

Interestingly enough you never know what will be on the next table. I've seen a broad range of firearms from someone in western garb shooting black powder cap 'n' ball to a guy on the next table touching off with a 44Mag (pressure wave was apparent!) or someone letting go with the newest AR.

You get used to it and the variety can add to the enjoyment.

BTW – Note the screens (you can see that brackets on my g-son’s bench where the screen drops in). Handy both to catch your ejects and to keep from popping your neighbor on the head.
