Doctors -v- Guns!!

Post by captain-03 on Sat Dec 04, 2010 10:11 pm

FACTS TO PONDER :

(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.

(B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.

(Calculation) Accidental deaths per physician is*0.171*

Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept of Health Human Services.

Now think about this:

Guns:

(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000.

*(Yes, that's 80 million..)*

(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is1,500.

(Calculation) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is *.000188*

Statistics courtesy of FBI

So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, 'Guns don't kill people, doctors do.'

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat.

We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand ! ! ! ! !

Out of concern for the public at large, I withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention and go see a DOCTOR!!

Old News but -
In what is described as an effort to curb handgun violence, a group called Doctors Against Handgun Injury, a spin off of the AMA and organized medicine, is calling for sweeping changes in the patient-doctor relationship that would allow physicians, including psychiatrists, to pry into their patients' gun ownership.

Didn't see a link to contact them but would love to send your statistics to them Captain.

I think it's "Doctors Against Handgun Injury", a division of the New York Academy of Medicine representing over 600,000 doctors.

There are lots of Google hits:

Their home web page is really stupid:

Doctor Safety

Post by cdiamond on Sat Apr 02, 2011 3:08 pm

I take issue with your comparison.

I also would challenge the physician related death statitics put out by our government, as I would most of the government's data. What is a physician related death? They are not murderers, unless you count abortionist, then your statitics would be signficantly different.

In regards to healthcare, the average person takes very little responsibility for the overall physical well being. They frequently eat and drink whatever they want, carry arouond 40+ extra pounds, never exercise, then blame their physician for a health related complication. The number one threat to public health is more likely biscuit poisoning! In regards to the physicians role, I would say that non-compliance is far more dangerous than the directed care patients would receive.

I do agree with your implication that they proper use and possession of guns is far less dangerous then often portrayed. This is an image that needs to be clarified and accurately portrayed but by comparing it to physicians is the wrong avenue to make your point.

Doctors vs. Guns

Post by cdiamond on Sat Apr 02, 2011 5:26 pm

Its all good, we are definitely on the same side of these issues or we would not be on this forum.

For an interesting comparison of gun injury to something common, check out the book Freakanomics. The authors are economisy and study data. They compare the risk of injury or death in homes with gun ownership to those of homes that have a swimming pool. Guess what, pools are more dangerous. Interesting read, so are some of the other chapters.

Many doctors in Florida were questioning their patients on gun ownership and placing the info in the patient’s files. Because of this the Florida gun groups/owners were able to get their representative to place a bill before the house. The bill is in the approval stage and will eliminate some of the infringements on our gun rights by doctors. Gov. Scott has stated he will sign the Bill into law when it reaches his desk.

http://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2011/432

CS/CS/SB 432: Privacy of Firearm OwnersTrack This Bill
GENERAL BILL by Health Regulation; Criminal Justice; Evers

Privacy of Firearm Owners; Provides that a licensed medical care provider or health care facility may not record information regarding firearm ownership in a patient's medical record. Provides an exception for relevance of the information to the patient's medical care or safety. Provides that unless the information is relevant to the patient's medical care or safety, inquiries regarding firearm ownership or possession should not be made by licensed health care providers or health care facilities, etc.
The governor stated he would sign when it reaches his desk
