USPSA Handgun Match This Sunday At Magnolia...Jan 2nd.

Post by Cliff Cargill on Thu Dec 30, 2010 7:01 am

At least 4 courses of fire and 125 rounds or so. Bring extra just in case. If you've ever wanted to try that Glock or whatever you carry in a match, this is a great place to do it. You need a gun, belt, at least 5 mags, holster, mag pouches, eye and ear protection and ammo.

If you don't have all of the above, pm me and we'll round up loaner gear. There's no match fee your first time out.

Set-up begins at 7am...match starts at 9am.

Magnolia Rifle and Pistol Club next to the Swinging Bridge.

Come give it a try! thumbs up

I'll be there. I signed up for Single Stack but my gun isn't where I want it so I'm going to shoot my CZ I guess and run the Single Stack through the classifier to start getting classified for Single Stack National Championship. Look through your ole Single Stack gear and see what you have I can use there.

The Doc has finally cleared me and I'm planning on being there. My first match, actually my first rounds downrange, since September 5. Weather is looking like it will be pretty good, and I am looking forward to shaking off the dust and cobwebs.

For those that may be interested in coming, don't forget that you can preregister. Looks like there are around 20 shooters signed up so far:

See y'all there.

Well, the weather turned out to be really nice, the ground was not as wet as I expected, AND the power was back on at the range by Sunday morning. Nearly 40 competitors made the match and overall, it was another really good match put on by the Team Magnolia crew. It was great to be back on the range!

I took some hat cam videos and have linked them below for anyone that may be interested. If you saw me at the match, that's why I looked like a "miner" as Robert K. suggested...

My squad started on Stage 5, "Hoover Groover", a 23 round field course that included the "Texas Star". For being my first stage in several months, it started out pretty well. I blew the reload though, dropping the first mag I pulled off my belt and had to pull another one. This was followed by a poor performance on the steel, most likely due to rushing to recover from the flubbed reload. Adding to that, I was a bit conservitive shooting away from the no-shoots and dropped a few more points than I intended. 107 points in 15.32 seconds was 2nd Limited on the stage, but quite a distance behind Walt's nice run.

We moved to Stage 1, USPSA Classifier "Bill Drill" (Stage Diagram with round count and explanation here). As shown in the diagram, the back targets barely visible in the video are at 35 yards, but they sure seem farther when shooting it. My time was good, but I pulled a miss on the back left target (only 1 shooter in the match shot this stage without a penalty, nice job Toby). 97 points, 1 penalty, 17.93 seconds total for both strings put me 1st Limited here. I heard Walt had gun problems on this one when the lightened striker in his Glock broke.

Stage 2 was a 20 round field course. The third shot fired, first through the opening, edged the barrel next to the little popper, so I had to come back and pick it up. I shot a couple of targets out of my intended order too (care to guess which ones?), so the run wasn't as smooth as it could have been. 95 points in 10.75 seconds was 2nd Limited, edged out by Walter's 98 points in a slightly slower 10.91.

Stage 3 was a 32 round field course with a swinging target activated by a pull cord and starting with the gun on a "bar". I called a questionable shot on the swinger and put another one on it before leaving the position. Turned out I didn't need it as there were three hits on it. I did have an uncalled miss on another target though, and I started to reload again before the last port, hence the audible "ahh!". Otherwise this one flowed pretty well. 140 points, 1 penalty, in 11.58 seconds was 2nd place Limited to Walter's penalty free run that was about 3/4 of a second slower.

Stage 4, designed by Spanky on this forum, was another 32 round field course with a couple different ways to shoot it, since you could start at the back of the stage on either the left or the right. I don't know if I picked the best way, but it looked good and made sense at the time. It didn't leave much room for error on the reload, but there were no problems here unlike on Stage 5. I called a quetionable shot near the end and fired an extra one to be sure, but again it was unnecessary as all three hits were there. I was a few more points down again than I intended, and I will blame it on being conservative around the hardcover, but truthfully it was just a bit of sloppiness. 137 points in 12.11 seconds was good enough for 1st Limited.

Nice vids, DB. Congrats on the overall. I know it's hard coming back from an injury like that.

Great shooting.
