Swap brass for ammo?

Post by mgeoffriau on Wed 9 Feb 2011 - 15:21

Just had an idea earlier and wanted to see what the reloaders thought of it.

I've seen on plenty of gun boards that reloaders look for cheap brass from those who don't reload, or talking about picking up brass at the range, etc.

What if there was a brass/ammo exchange? IE, those with reloading equipment set an exchange rate -- something like 10 empty brass gets you 1 reloaded round of ammo. So, if I spend a day at the range and bring you 200 empty 9mm brass, I can trade them for 20 reloaded 9mm rounds.

Obviously, I may be way off on that exchange rate -- I have no idea what rate would provide an incentive for both parties, while rewarding the reloaders' time and material costs. 10 to 1, 5 to 1, could be whatever the reloader wants to set it at, really.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw the idea out there. I'd be interested to hear from any of you reloaders on why this could work, couldn't work, or how you might change the idea to make it work.

In theory, a good idea ... take a look at this thread for my take on the issue --

http://www.msgunowners.com/t9690-selling-reloads?highlight=reloads

While I understand one may not be "selling" the reloads, the issue of liability, etc, could come into play ... I do not know what gun it will be used in and how safe the gun is ... Also, a mistake by me could hurt someone -- things I am not willing to risk ...

Sell the unwanted/unneeded brass - buy your ammo with the proceeds IMHO

Ah, I hadn't really thought through the liability issues -- that's a good point. I guess I was thinking of it from the perspective that I figure ammo from a good reloader probably has a lower error rate that some of the cheap factory ammo like WWB.

Of course, when my pistol blows to bits and I'm missing a couple of digits, I'd want Winchester to replace my pistol and cover medical costs...so yeah, that's pretty much a deal breaker.
