I know this is a old thread but the for sale ad linked back to it. I have several 94s both pre 64 and post. The reason the receiver wear is so dramatic is starting in the middle of 63 Winchester started using a different metal for the receiver. That high iron content receiver will not take traditional bluing methods and was instead finished in a different manner. Normal handling or exposure to the elements will cause that finish to flake off (freckle etc) much quicker than on the older steel guns.
That's why I limit my post 64 model 94s to special run guns that have seen little to no use.

If someone could figure out a way to blue the receiver on the post 64 Winnies they could make a fortune.
