what's more impressive is that he responded in less than a day. i should clarify that the questions i had were regarding off-duty leo's carrying on school property. as the texts of 97-37-7 & 97-37-17 read, leo's would (technically) be committing a felony if they carried on school property and they weren't officially on-duty. it made no sense that a civilian licensee could carry on campus but an off-duty leo couldn't. judging by the response of the senate attorney (not the senator), it is understood that civilian licensees will be able to carry concealed on educational property even if they are a student. the only confusion i can see is the issue of leo's being off-duty. my reasoning, however, is that since 45-9-101(14) exempts certified law enforcement from the licensing requirements, they would essentially be granted the same rights and priveleges as licensees. i'll update when he gets back to me.

PS: thanks jake for turning me on to this site from 1911Forum.

well, i must say that he seems to be on top of the issue this time. however, i've written/emailed him previously in regards to other issues and he never responded (i left that part of the email out). i later confronted him and asked him about it. i got the feeling that he was 100% politician. i've interviewed enough people to have a pretty good sense of when they're full of it, and i'm pretty sure he was just trying to win my vote that day. nonetheless, he's shown promise on most other issues and that counts for a lot. i'm really looking forward to seeing how he helps with this issue.

Take a listen to his radio show on 98.1 fm in Laurel / Hattiesburg area from 5:30 until 8ish pm. He's not on there as often as he once was but I know Chris personally and he is different than most politicians. I do believe that there is a certain amount of corruption that anyone is susceptible to in positions of authority. Power does corrupt some slower than others.

well, i tried to get some kind of clarification to the contradiction of laws but i guess it's not happening. i had high hopes after receiving that email from my senator, but that was all i got. i emailed him again to find out exactly what needed to be done and he merely advised that he could get an AG opinion if i wanted. well, an AG opinion doesn't change the law or provide any type of immunity. so, i guess we're still stuck with a bunch of legislative contradictions and nobody to clear them up. that is, unless, someone wants to intentionally get charged with a felony and try their luck through the appellate process, LOL.

You weren't really expecting an honest straight forward timely reply from a politician were you?

LOL, well i was trying to give him the benefit of the the doubt. i've had a lot of people try to convince me that he was not the average politician. maybe he's just a little more "in-touch" than the rest of them.

Talked on phone with Master Sargeant Williams this morning. Good conversation, said details were in the works, would be finished by July 1. Bruce.

Re: House Bill 506

I just moved here from NC and have a NC CCW. I have always been upset that I cannot carry on college campus. I'm 25 and I am finishing an engineering degree at ms state. We are here for military so we are still NC residents. NC does require an 8 hr class and you to qualify with a pistol to get your permit. Which I have done and have the certificate.

I read most of this but I'm confused and coming in on the back end of this. Does this mean we might be able to carry on college campus? So the bill passes to law but there is no clear cut answer if we can carry or not? Can someone summarize this for me? Thanks.

Now the other question would i be able to exercise this right since in have a NC permit and am stationed here with the military?

Bugman,

I don't think MS will endorse your NC permit.

If you are stationed here in a branch of the military, I believe you can get a MS permit without the 12-month waiting period. I further believe you can get that permit endorsed by taking an additional class here. I'm a bit fuzzy on the residency rules, but they're listed in 45-9-101.

Otherwise, I think your only option would be to become a MS resident. If you do this, you can surrender your NC permit when you apply for a MS CCW to get the 12-month waiting period waived. That would leave you for 45 days with no CCW permit at all before your new MS CCW came in.

I think (but I'm not sure) that you can use those 45 days to take the endorsement class, so at least when your time was up you'd have all your ducks in a row.
