Gunsmiths in Mississippi

Post by slabsides45 on Fri Apr 24, 2009 9:30 am

Thought it might be helpful to have members post the names of gunsmiths they have used and been pleased with throughout the state. Kinda a public service thingy. I'll start:

In NW Mississippi, I have used and continue to use Lee Thomas in Nesbit. His phone number is (662) 429-3701.

He has done the following for me: reliability job on a 1911 carry pistol; action smoothing and bluing job on a Marlin 1895 guide gun; Glock repair and new sights installation; installed new sights on a 1911; buttstock angle adjustment on new over/under; installed recoil can and grind to fit stock on a Tikka rifle and a Mossberg pump (yes, they help a LOT!!); trigger job on a Sig P220. All work has been top notch!

If you have a gunsmith that you've had a good experience with, please share!

Tim Thompson- Bills Custom Automatics. Shelby MS. www.billscustomautomatics.com (nice website check out the custom gun pics.)

Reliablity job on 2 1911's; installation of sights on 2 1911's; reblued, straightend bent barrell rib, put in larger safety button and replaced a broken ejector , drilled and installed scope rail for eotch scope on my much abused benellie SBE... i still cant believe the looks good as new gun i got back was the rust covered and banged up gun that i had brough him.

I highly recommend Tim his work is top notch and turn around is very resonable for the amount of work that he does.

He is also in the middle of a build on my Rem700 that should be finished near end of summer. He is putting Kreiger #7 1x10 twist in 300 winmag on the blueprinted action, it will be pillar &glassbedded in a Mcmillian HTG ADJ stock (2 more months before it arrives) a jewell trigger and borden custom bottom metal. all metal will be teflon coated. Nightforce rings and bases. For the short term it will be topped with my Luepold 6.5x20 but will be upgraded to the 5.5x22x56 nightforce as soon as possible.

I cant wait to see and shoot the finished product. pics will follow as soon as it is finished.

Highly recommend George Barry in Indianola...662-887-5792 (home). He works three mornings a week at a sporting goods store but does work at his home. Is excellent at most everything related to firearms especially checkering and stock work. Have known him, shot and hunted with him for 30 years.

Gunsmith

Post by BIGBORE on Thu May 28, 2009 9:31 pm

I live in Petal. David Duckworth is the most respected gunsmith in the area. He has been in the business for many years. He has done all kinds of work for me. I would never consider taking my stuff to anyone else. He is a Vietnam vet and a great guy to talk to. He is listed in the book. You should call him. You will not be dissapointed

I took the rifle to Mr. Thomas to have him glass, pillar bed, and free float the barrel. He is also going to recrown to 11 degrees. I can't wait to get her back and run some rounds through her. I've got my fingers crossed that she will be a shooter when the Dr. finishes with her.

Anyone know of a good place within reason in the North MS area? Found a revolver for a good deal if I can get some things checked out and fixed. I don't mind driving to Jackson if that is what it takes but that adds $150 just in diesel just about!

There's a smith shop in Pontotoc, his site is http://pontotocamericanarms.com/ He's somewhat rude if you email him asking for his normal fees for thinks like mounting gas blocks on a virgin barrel. He's alright in person though. Also today I was working in the Wallerville area of union county (between Pontotoc and New Albany off of 15 towards Sherman) and came across a gun smith ed's I believe it was. I don't know anymore information on it I didn't have time to ask.

I would stay far away from Pontotoc American arms. A very close friend of mine had a real bad run in with this guy. I've used Richie's Gun shop in Algoma, MS.....Richie is a stand up guy that does good work.

I've tried Bullz Eye Sports in Lucedale twice. The work done was no better than most kitchen table smiths and as expensive as most really good smiths. Don't get me wrong he got the job done. It seemed like he was actually trying to not show an inkling of craftsmanship. The last job was a simple D&T for a scope mount. One hole was tapped cooked, he lost my rear sight and charged me $70.

I think I'll try Mr. Entrkin or drive to Petal and use Mr. Duckworth.
