Questions about CCW renewal

Post by USAFVet on Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:35 pm

I have read the laws on the CCW in Mississippi and I understand MHP is supposed to notify me within 90 days of the expiration of my current permit.
Question #1: Can I go to the nearest troop HQ (in my case that would be Brookhaven) to get my fingerprints done and turn in my application for renewal?
Question #2: When I went to get my original permit they didn't like the photo I had so they took another photo for the permit. Will they take your permit photo for a fee or reject your application if you have no photo with you?
Question #3: How long do they usually take to send the renewed permit after the paperwork in turned in?
Question #4: Isn't it a ripoff to have to pay $32.00 for a new set of fingerprints every
time you renew? I don't know that I've ever heard of anyone getting finger transplants.

I can't answer the other questions, but I can address this one. "No". The idea of the fingerprints is to ensure that you are actually who you say you are.

PS - I renewed my permit a couple of years ago and all I specifically recall is that it only took a few minutes and I walked out with my new permit.

I yam Who I yam (popeye cartoon quote) Sorry I have to disagree. Smile If that's the case why don't they get fingerprints when You vote or for DL renewal. scratch 2 cents

Because you don't get fingerprinted for your initial driver's license and because there is no criminal history check for a driver's license. A convicted felon can get a driver's license. A convicted felon can not get a concealed carry permit. Huge, huge, huge difference. Very Happy

Because we don't have voter id in Mississippi? I am pretty sure you can still have a DL if you have a felony conviction, getting your fingerprints is for making sure who you are, but mostly it to make sure you haven't been convicted of something to bar you from getting the permit since the last time your were printed. 2 cents

Yes people have tried to change their prints, most have failed. John Dillinger tried with acid and failed.

It worked out in the end. Some nice gentlemen with badges and guns blew most of his fingers off, so it was no longer an issue. thumbs up

The FBI won't run a check on a set of prints that are over 6 months old, that is why you have to get a new set of prints. The whole idea of having to have a permit is ridiculous, but that's a whole 'nuther thing!

This has been discussed before. A guy I work with renewed his permit by mail and did NOT send in new prints. He got his permit.

The state was making folks get a new set of prints every time, but they have changed. See this FAQ posted at the MS web site:

Do I have to be re-fingerprinted every time I renew my permit?

No. Fingerprints will be done every other five year renewal.
We know your prints do not change, but your eligibility to be a permit holder can. Our laws require a background check thru the FBI. The FBI will not check a set of fingerprints that are over six (6) months old.

I sent in my renewal by mail to MHP @ Jackson. Used passport photo and sent a money order made out to MS DEPT PUBLIC SAFETY..... $82 CCW fee and $15 late fee (out of state working for several months) for a total of $97 money order. I got fingerprinted last time. First 3 forms notarized. CCW will hit the 6 month expiry on this Sunday. Postmarked Today. Arrival Monday. Did I do everything correct? Opinions?
Thanks

Received CCW in mail on Thursday 16, so I guess that answers my own question. 1 week total turnaround.

I rec'd the renewal notice fromMHP the first week of June (current permit expires Sept 2011). They advised I could renew by mail since I was still current with the fingerprint provision of every 5 years. So, I completed the forms and had them notorized. I included a current photo (not very good), photo copies of current DL and CC permit as required. Returned all the the next day with payment. One week later I recieved my renewal permit Surprised . The picture was my current DL photo. I guess they pulled up my DL and used it. Interestingly, the effective date is Sept 2011 which is still 3 months away. Go figure.

BTW, over 65 only pays $57 for the renewal Very Happy
