Post by cwink on Wed Feb 23, 2011 9:16 am

I currently load for 223,22-250, 6mm Rem, 7mm-08, 30-06 and 358 Win. and have been using H380 and IMR4895 for the most part.. But if you had to choose one all around powder to stock up on what would you use.

Since I load for service rifles (semi auto) I would keep more of the IMR4895 myself. I load for my M-1 Garand, AR-15, 1903 Springfield, M1A, etc.

I use H335 in .223, .308 and .30-06. I am about to try some IMR4895 though.

I meant to call to ask. Does powder valley sell black powder? I'll leave the bombs for you SGF, I'll stick to my golf ball mortar. Shoots the bad boys about 4-500 yards.

And now back to the topic, some of the best reloaders have piped in.

Some of my guns dont like just one powder. I use varget or h322 for 223 but for just blasting i use h335 or wc846, h414 for 22-250, h322 or h335 for 6.8, imr4895 for 30-06, varget for 308, and h4831 for 300wm and 270.
And unique for 40sw.
Wish i could just stock one powder Sad

Yeah I know some guns just like certain powder, but I am thinking more along the lines of if shtf and reloading componets are either scarce or too expensive..

My favorite for all round purpose is Accurate 2230 for rifle ammo. Granted, it is not the best for super accuracy, but I have used it in.....

223
308
30-06
8mm
45-70

with good results. (and future 7.62x39)

As for a powder for handgun ammo (less magnum loads)..... Either Win 231 or Unique. Bullseye is good, but doesn't have the range as these two.

Win 231(HP38) or Hp335. Not perfect for all rounds, but will sling lead downrange.

IMR 4895 will work in most any rifle round.

There is no Holy Grail or free lunch. Varget will work well with most of the calibers you mentioned. However like women..most rifles have a preference for the powder they like. There are some loads that work well caliber specific across a broad spectrum..Other work well in a number of calibers. Ask yourself..do you want the gnat's hind leg in accuracy or do you prefer to buy powder in bulk and load it for several rifles/calibers. There are no wrong answers...

With the exception of Black Powder..I could only dream of keeping a large keg of powder that would work from 9mm to .308 and produce the accuracy and reliability I have in mind. Excellent question-I have often thought if we could put a man on the moon why cant one powder work for everything..

If there is one powder that could work in both handgun and rifle ammo...... I would say it is Unique. If I were "stuck" with only one choice (for the long haul...), I would grab Unique powder. Will give most handgun ammo full potential, and will get the job done in most rifle ammo. Maybe not full velocity, but will "get the job done"....................

Why IMR 4895 over Hogden? I understand that the (new) Hogden 4895 is supposed to be very temperature insensitive.
