Hard decisions!
I've really been wanting to jump up a notch in my highpower shooting and have been planning to buy a RRA NM AR-15 when the right one comes along. It did today at the gunshow in Birmingham! Everything is set up for highpower shooting, 2 stage good trigger, stainless 1:7 barrel, lead in the stock, NM sights, all at a very attractive price. BUT....
There is an M1, just gorgeous built buy one of the old time well known Garand smiths in the early eighties to NM specs with about a 50 round count. All the wood is sealed and varnished, handguards unitized, NM sights, etc AND It's an IHC with LMR barrel.
The RRA is what I need, but they make them new every day and I just don't know when I'll ever see another affordable NM M-1, much less an IHC.
I only have cash for one

Don't do it, don't go over to the Dark Side. If the Good Lord intended guns to made of plastic we'd have plastic trees and plastic ore, instead of walnut trees and iron ore. Keep the faith.

M16's aren't going anywhere any time soon....if the guy that did the smithing is no longer doing it, then that makes that piece even more desirable. But you know that already. Get the Garand for sure! If you need to get rid of one, I'm taking gun donations

I'd have to buy the Garand! Although, I think you will be ok either way.

Re: Hard decisions!
Get the M1! Less competition for us in the HP matches with AR15s (hee hee).
Seriously Phillip, it sounds like a good rifle. Just remember CMP rules for the John C Garand matches say the rifle must be "as-issued" . . . no NM mods, bedding, etc. are allowed. That doesn't mean you shouldn't snap it up while you can. Like you and others have already written here, Rock River will still be making more plastic rifles but they aren't making any more M 1 rifles !

That's why I've never touched my Winchester, I want to keep it legal for JCG.
Now all I need to know is how much cash I can get out of an ATM!
They have everything at this show from Mosin's in full target stocks to an M5 Stuart tank!

Re: Hard decisions!
I actually was able to climb in a functioning M5 Stuart tank at the Grant's store in Pascagoula back when I was a Junge; I think the National Guard had them out there. It worked but they wouldn't let me drive it...and said they didn't have any shells for the turret gun. I thought at the time "what a waste!" . . .
As for the ATM ya gotta trick it by getting the max, then waiting a while, then getting the max . . . not that I've ever done that to buy a rifle or anything.

Phillip..... If you can squeeze some extra cash from the ATM (beyond what you need for that NM Garand), PLEASE buy me a 91/30 that you think looks good (at less than $100). The $$$ will be waiting on you when you get home. MANY thanks ! ! !

I saw one for $120 that looked new, came with all accessories and I think a hard case. PM me your phone and I'll check it out tomorrow.
FYI I was talking about Finnish target rifles on the 91/30 actions (I think) but are in wood that resembles Anshutz and priced around $550, IIRC I think I found them on gunbroker http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=206345733

Thought of you today, I met Col. E. Wayne Davis ret. He is in charge of sorting bayonets at the CMP now. I told him of your brazed handle and he said send it back with a note to replace it with a nice one, the junk ones are not being sent out anymore.
Here's part of his collection, all makes years and types.

A HUGE +1 on that comment..................
At least at a good gunshow you get to see & feel what you are buying before any "surprizes" show up via UPS......

Re: Hard decisions!
Exceeded maximum amount them went ATM hunting and got closer but then hit max withdrawals in one day, $400 shy. The seller agreed to take a down payment so i'm going back to Birmingham around the 13th. Does anyone want to turn it into an Anniston trip?
