Looking for a good CCW/Home Defense Gun Combo

Post by cwink on Thu Apr 14, 2011 9:37 am

Right now I carry a Keltec 32 in an ankle holster, (yeah I know everyone thinks its too small) but it is more than my little 22lr dieringer that I carry in the summer months. Smile I would like to find something that I can carry both summer and winter that has a little more umph than the two above but that is easy to carry.. I also have a Bersa 9 Ultra Compact that I use as my home protection gun. I got this one because the size is not to big or too much recoil for my wife to shoot if need be and it has a rail on it. But to me it is too big and heavy to carry comfortably.

I had the Bersa Thunder 380 and loved that gun, but sold it..Sad.. but not sure it would be enough for a good home defense gun

So I am thinking something between the Kel Tec 32 and the Bersa 9 but I am having a hard time finding a good in between gun to fit both bills..

Any other options? Or any other ways that would make it easier to carry a larger gun like the Bersa 9 UC???

My wife and I both have Charter Arms ultralight 38special revos.... 5 rounds of 38+P ...... I usually carry my SIG 238, but it's not cheap...$600+

I'd suggest any of the mini .380's, a .38 snubbie, or a small subcompact single stack 9mm. I really like my PF-9. It is small enough for pocket carry with anything but jeans. And 7+1 9mm is pretty good firepower for a package that small.

Check out the taurus 709 and 740 slim. 709 is 9mm and 740 is 40sw. They are very slim and have good grip and trigger.

I have a ruger lcr 38. Its nice and light.

Yes you need a bigger caliber, but you gotta ditch the ankle holster either way.
Ankle holsters are for backup weapons. There is no way you can get to your weapon fast enough for it to be your primary weapon.
I would go compact 9mm in a location you can get to without major body movement.

Revolvers are my first choice, but with a 5yo running around the house I like the added safety of being able to keep one out of the chamber and him not being able to rack the slide in the off chance he gets a hold of it.

I have a hard time going with a Taurus.. I have had issues with 3 of the Taurus that I have had in the past. 2 revolvers and 1 auto, and I don't mind paying for a good auto. So what are some of the compact single stack 9s besides the PF9 and LC9.

You might want to consider the Ruger Sr9c, it's a double stack but it's a thin one.

The Ruger is just about the same size as my Bera.. I'll check out the Kahr..

What are some good options for holsters to carry the 9 in???? Something that I can wear in summer and winter, with shirt tucked or untucked???

If you're going to that subcompact size, there are many more good options..... my Ruger SR9c is great, and my XD9subcompact is even better..... the XD is easier to tuck in the waistband holster....

Which specific 9? I usually carry mine in a generic pocket holster, in my pocket or stuck in my boot. Sometimes I'll put it in the pocket holster and put the holster between my belt and pants. I know this is odd, but it works for me. The Fobus C21B paddle holster fits my PF-9 like a glove, but I never use it.
+1 on the Kel-tec PF9 and the pocket holster. It works for me. My humble 2 cents.

Tucked or untucked, any caliber, my first choice will always be a Crossbreed Supertuck. Around $80 through midway, or wait a month or so on crossbreed for the same service and warranty...the price is a turn off to most people, but if $80 is too much for a holster then I'd recommend a different mode of carry...like pepperspray....because $80 is the ideal price range for a quality holster that is still affordable.

I'm a big fan of the Glock 26. You can carry with a flush fitting 10 rnd mag and swap to the 33 rnd happy stick for home defense.

I carry the Kimber Crimson Ultra in 45acp.......carry in the waist band. I was shooting with my dad and uncle in the yard one day. Dad had the keltec 9mm and uncle pulls out the Ruger lcp in 380 i think, well they took turns putn 10'' groups in the target, i pulled the 45 and went to work.......they just couldnt get over how much bigger the holes were the 45 left......today dad carries the Springfield XD in 45 and uncle got a Kimber Crimson Carry.......try a 45, you'll like it!

Somewhere in between...I think that would be a slim 9mm. Check out the Kahr CW9 and CM9. Also Taurus 709 and Kel-Tec PF9, oh and the Ruger LC9. The Kahr line is my favorite, and can be had for about $400, which is a great price being that their quality is that of a Swiss watch.

I have been carrying my new Kahr CW9 for the last week or so and I am really impressed on how easy it carries. I wouldn't rule it out at all. If you don't want a 9mm, it comes in 40 and 45

The Kahr CM9 is out if you can find one. It's the same size as the PM9 with a few of the "luxuries" left off in order to make it more affordable. I think they're in the $450 range. It would make a great carry gun.

I'm still in favor of the G26 with a happy stick if it's going to double as a home defense gun though.
