Does anyone make a single shot .22 rifle?

Post by flagaman on Tue Apr 19, 2011 11:24 am

Okay. Besides the cricket/chipmunk type kids rifles, does anyone make a decent lightweight singleshot bolt action 22? Savage/Stevens makes a nice style, but they are not much on the lightweight side. I have read some about the adult sized cricket/chipmunk type, but have never seen one except in pics. Would like something for my grandson that is closer to the adult size, but not so heavy he can't shoot it off hand. I know of none so there might be no answer and if none are out there, well it is what it is.
Thanks all.

Flagaman, is there a reason you're just looking at bolt guns? Not sure what weight you're wanting exactly but what about the H&R Sportster? It's a break-open instead of bolt action and 5.5 pounds. It's a pretty nice rifle.

Henry also makes a single shot bolt action .22 that's just over 4 pounds.

Marlin has a new XT-22 youth single shot model that weighs 4lbs that is the same size as the Crickett adult model.
If you can find one the Winchester Wildcat .22 was magazine fed but had a single shot cut off.

Go on gun auctions and look for the Remington 510. It is a single bolt action gun like you are looking for. The rifle is extremely accurate and will last longer than most modern guns for about the same price. Same family as the 513T Matchmaster.

Thanks to all. Looks like it is as I kind of thought. To get a slim, easy handling bolt gun, it will have to be used. Some nice suggestions sent my way. That TC is one interesting looking setup, but it's just not a bolt action. Guess it's time to let grandson throw in his two bits worth and see what shakes out. Thanks again gentlemen.

+1 on the Remington 510. It would be good for the 22 F-classes we've been having too.

I don't know your budget but if you want one he can be proud of, get him a low wall copy. Bolt actions aren't everything!

the low wall is some nice firearm. Unfortunately the price is way higher than I can spring for at this time. The remingtons are nice and I think my best bet is to watch for one and jump on it when I get the chance. thanks to all.

I had a Remington 514 single shot bolt action .22 that was very lightweight. I sold it though.

I went by Quick Cash Pawn in Magee today on my way back from the coast. They had a Remington 580 with a 3x9x40 Tasco scope for $199. The 580 is a single shot .22 with a 24" barrel. This one was made in Dec 75 and it looked new. The rear sight had been removed to install the scope. He said the price was negotiable.

I think they're open on Saturdays but I'm not sure. They are located on the East side of 49 behind the Wendy's in Magee.

Ditto for the older Remington single shot bolt action rifles. I am the proud owner of one that has been in my family for probably about 70 years. It still looks good and is extremely accurate with open sights. I refinished the stock and blued the barrell recently and I don,t remember it ever looking that good as a boy when I learned to shoot a rifle with that little gun. It has a 24 inch barrel but probably doesn,t weigh over 5 pounds.

Thanks to all for their valuable input. The Hattiesburg gun show did yield an interesting collection of single shot bolt guns. Most of the remingtons mentioned were for sale there as well as the juicy winchester bolt guns that are the benchmark for target rimfires. But you best have your wallet full if you planned on picking up a decent speciman.
I did pick up a single shot 22 though, one that was affordable and I am pleased with it. Very clean inside and outside and the weight was right for my need. It is a savage model 3C. Only thing I can find on this model is that it was probably made in the late 30's to early 40's. It was a private sale and the previous owner said it shot well. Hope he was spot on about that. Again, thanks to all.

I looked the Savage Model 3 up in several of my books. The manufacture dates varied but it seems they were made from around '33 to '52. The early ones had 26" barrels and after WWII they had 24" barrels. Approximately 121,000 were made. I hope you enjoy it. They don't make them like that anymore.
