RCBS Primer Pocket Swaging tool vs Dillon 600

Post by msredneck on Mon May 02, 2011 4:00 pm

Been thinking I need a primer pocket swager...I'm suddenly interested in mil-surp '06 and 223 brass

I'm mulling over a primer pocket swager. Dillon 600 or RCBS press mounted primer pocket swager.

RCBS is about $40 and the Dillon is $100

There's not doubt which one is a better tool..

Who has one or both

Give me some pros and cons of these tools...I've heard its real easy to break the rods on the RCBS...

I've just avoided the whole crimped primer thing for years because of the PIA factor...

I'm taking the plunge...need advise for folks that use em...or if there is something else out there that I have overlooked...chime in

I've used both. I like the Dillon better. Sometimes the RCBS would not get the crimp out completely.

The Dillon works by supporting from inside the case. IIRC, the RCBS (and others) use a shell holder, which means the support is the case rim. Case rims can BEND...................

Yes, the Dillon is big $$$$........... but worth it.

ALSO.... With the Dillon, you will need to sort brass before swagging because of the slightly different internal case dimensions.

Still......................... Go with the Dillon.

OR........ Buy a Dillon 1050 and get the built in swagger for "FREE"..... Smile

..got a Dillion that has been sitting on the shelf for more than a year ... only used it on .223 and .45 -- really do not know how well it works on .308 and 30-06 ...

Anyone out there used it on .308 and 30.06?

I have both and from my view, the Dillon works better. I started using the RCBS first and later purchased the Dillon. The RCBS tool has a rod that supports the base of the shell case as it pushes the case into the crimp remover. This rod bends easily if you don't have the correct adjustment thus you have to sort the cases by manufacturer. It does a good job when set up correctly but even then, one out of spec case will bend or break the rod and you have to order another. The Dillon, on the other hand, is fairly simple to adjust and, to me, seems to do a better job of removing the crimp. I've used it on .223, .308, and 30-06 brass and if you adjust it properly it does a very good job. The Dillon has more "forgiveness" in the adjustments than the RCBS. I only use the Dillon now.

msredneck......you can borrow mine and see if you like it before you drop the $$ on a Dillon.....I like the Dillon alot, but then again I've been swaging 1500 pieces of .223 at a time.

Many Thanks for the offer philly60...

Sounds like the Dillon is the way to go

One more question.

I really don't want to bolt the Dillon 600 to a bench...can it be properly used attached to a Bench with C clamps....

Yes, a few people that I know use C clamps to hold it down. Just make sure you have enough room for the arm to fully pivot when you swage.

Thanks for the info....I don't see this as an everyday use tool...maybe 3 or 4 times a year so clamping it down outside on a picnic table would work good
