Seeking info on 556 ar / 223 bolt reloads

Post by 685 on Sun May 22, 2011 5:05 pm

Ordered one bx of 100 Hornady 50 gr. Super Explosive SPP and one bx of 100 Nosler 50 gr. Ballistic Tip Varmint SPT. I have loaded most Barnes and Sierra Varmint pills and was happy w/ all. Any shooters have opinions on expected performance on Hornadys and Noslers mentioned above as pest eradication rounds? Hornadys were $13.29 per 100. Hornady loaders man. recommended 3500 and lower vel. but Thats not an issue w/ me as I stay below this. What thinks ye? thinking

I've always liked Hornady products. I've killed a good many deer with their BTSP in .30-06. I don't have experience with that bullet though. I imagine it will work fine. I believe accuracy will be more important than explosiveness, won't it?

Absolutely correct on the accuracy part, gotta hit it first but the explosive should I.M.O. should be viewed as fragmenting, not allowing a pass through on small critters. The Barnes and Sierras have been awsome in the past for me.

I loaded some 50gr super explosive and ended up shooting deer with them. Just loaded them on top of a nice dose of h335. Never really checked accuracy with them tho. Never used any noslers.
