Bobbing the hammer on a Charter Arms .38

Post by fastarrow on Mon May 23, 2011 2:15 pm

O.K. Before the negative comments start flying let me explaine. Yesterday I bought a Charter Arms Undercover .38 Model 43820 for my Wife at the Pascagoula gun show. Now I know there are better revo's out there. But I let her pick the revo she liked best in hoping that she would start shooting a little. And be willing to have her own personal defence weapon. I showed her S&W's, Rugers, Taurus's & Rossi's. And gave her my opinion (S&W Ladysmith). But she spotted this C/A and thought it was the cats meow.

Well now she has changed her mind! And wants a S&W Ladysmith. Go figure! And I thought I would keep the C/A for myself since I don't own a revo. But I like a hammerless revo and thought about lopping the spur off the hammer. I have access to a milling machine. So it won't be cut off with a hacksaw or dremmel tool. Would this work. Or do I have to change to a heavier hammer spring?

Help a Brother out!

Good question. I've been thinking of making some revolver alterations myself. May be somebody with a little experience in the matter can help out. I'm curious as well.

Have used stock springs when changing to lighter hammers on many 1911s, with less weight to slam forward, I don't see why you would have any problems with light strikes on a revo either.

Nothing wrong with a Charter Arms pistol, I like the Undercovers have had a couple of them. I don't think you would need different springs if you bobbed the hammer.

is the firing pin in the hammer?
if not there is a guy on brianenos forums that is the bomb.com at hammer jobs on revos
http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=95429
usually you want the hammer and trigger intune so you might wanna get a trigger job done on it.

No the firing pin is separate from the hammer.

I cant speak to the CA per se' but a hammer was bobbed on an old DW .38 and it worked just fine after.

Seen plenty of homemade bob jobs. Never saw one that didn't shoot just the same. The metal you take will be well less than an ounce. Charter arms are good revolvers. Agree with 99.9% of what Beladran says but putting the money of a trigger job into a $200 pistol is like putting lipstick on a pig. Again, I like Charter Arms, it must had a decent trigger or you wouldn't have bought it.

Yea the weight removed would be minimal. I was thinking about the inertia effect, Less weight would take more spring tention to make a solid strike. But yalls comments make sense. The trigger is pretty nice. But if I have to have a trigger job it won't cost me much. I know a qualified gunsmith that will trade work for fishing trips. I'll put him on some speckled trout & red fish for a trigger job.

I did this with a Charter Arms & a Taurus, no problems with either one.

Here it is. I probably could have removed more. But I didn't want to push my luck. He polished it up a bit. It worked great. No misfires. He said he would do a trigger job if I wanted him to. But i'll have to put him on more trout in exchange for payment. awesome
