Woodchuck hunting in New York

Post by Doug Bowser on Thu May 26, 2011 7:38 pm

The woodchuck is a 30 pound critter and hard to kill. They burrow in fields and can ruin a field in a season, if they are not thinned out. I lived 20 miles East of Syracuse, NY and I had permission to hunt woodchucks on about 12 different farms. The shots with my Model 70 Winchester in .270 WCF with a K10 Weaver telescope would be from 200 to 600 yards. I reloaded and used Sierra 90 gr bullets loaded near maximum.I would shoot 200-300 'chucks in each season. The only problem was, the grass would grow tall and we would have to stop hunting until the farmers cut the grass for hay.

I used to use a S&W Model 10 6" for close shots. The reload was a Herter's 135 gr half jacketed hollow point with 3.5 gr Bullseye. The way to get close to a woodchuck is the watch their feeding patterns. They have BAD eyesight and they will stay down to feed and rise up from time to time to look around. If you get the wind in your face, and stop moving as the chuck rises, he won't see you if you are not moving. I was able to get within 30 yards of the chucks and dispatch them with the 135 gr bullet.

This is one of the only things I miss about New York.

You know, for some reason I thought of woodchucks as being like ground squirrels until I read this Doug.

Did you skin them or just dispose of them?

I guess they've had as much time as we've had to develop high-power rifles. lol
