Enahanced Concealed Carry Permit
Forgive me if this has already been discussed but I couldn't find it. Does anyone know if the Dept PS is issuing the "enhanced" concealed carry permit that Barbour recently signed into law? If so, how does one obtain this? Thanks.
Re: Enahanced Concealed Carry Permit
What is the "enhanced" carry permit? I haven't heard of it.

Re: Enahanced Concealed Carry Permit
There was a law recently passed and signed by Barbour that will allow you to get an "enhanced" CC permit. This permit allows carry in some of the "prohibited" places listed in the first law such as unsecured areas of the court house, churches, bars, etc. My understanding is that one has to show that they have had an approved gun safety / training course before applying. I've read it in a few of Jeff Pittman's updates that he sends out to MS Firearm Owners Assn members.

I just received an email from the department head of the firearms unit at MS Dept of Public Safety. They have until 7/1/11 to get this going. He wrote, "On 5/31/2011 5:18 PM, Eugene Williams, Jr, MSGT wrote:
The department is working on that matter at this time and it should be resolved by July 1st.

Re: Enahanced Concealed Carry Permit
There are a couple threads about it under Gun Laws. And it's an endorsement, not necessarily called an enhancement. It's like getting your motorcycle endorsement on your DL

Re: Enahanced Concealed Carry Permit
No one seems to have a fix on what they consider to be the proper training documentation you must present...nor do they have any 411 on the process for getting it...
Thus its been a big snoozer

Re: Enahanced Concealed Carry Permit
The permit does not require an new card. It is simply a sticker that goes on a current concealed carry permit. There is a course that must be taken, and once the course is passed you will receive a certificate that signifies that you have successfully completed the certification process for the enhanced/endorsed concealed carry permit. Fill out the certificate with your permit number, then take it to a Highway Patrol office that issues concealed carry permits. I took the class from instructors at Sherman Hills Shooting Center in Forrest. If you google the permit, you can easily find locations and names of certified instructors. The only additional cost beyond the standard permit should be the cost of the class, which is usually about $75, give or take. Sherman Hills charged $69 when I took it.
Here is a website I found with additional information. http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/mississippi.pdf
Not sure if it set up as a link.. If not, just copy and paste. There is a link on the page that will take you to a list of certified instructors to get the documentation necessary for the endorsed permit.

Does this mean that if you have the endorsement concealed carry on school campuses will be permitted? Or did I read it wrong?

The new endorsement does allow you to carry in a school, provided the fact you never signed a form stating no weapons allowed. You can carry anywhere EXCEPT for Police Stations, Courtrooms while court is in session and any place of nuisance. You can even now carry onto a property that has a sign posted no firearms, so you can CC inside Northpark now with the endorsement.
I just took my firearms saftey class at Surplus City in Clinton for $60.

That's where I went to find local instructors, called Curtis and he had a spot open.

Re: Enahanced Concealed Carry Permit
I just got back from Batesville with a nice, new IC sticker.
I asked the woman when it comes time to renew (in 5 years, i know, it will be awhile, hah) would they give me another sticker or will they start issuing permits with the endorsement on the permit similar to motorcycle and other endorsements.
She said I'd have to update my training certificate aka take the class again.
Maybe it's just me, but that seems kind of silly to take the same basic beginners class over and over.

A friend said he was told by the instructor in his class that when it came time to renew, retaking the class was not necessary, he just had to requalify by reshooting at the range. Does anyone know if this is the case? If true, maybe renewal would be cheaper than retaking the course. Opinions???
