Lessons Learned - Camp McCain Shoot - Wpns & Ammo

Post by captain-03 on Mon Jun 06, 2011 7:57 pm

Our second Camp McCain AR shoot is now in the books. Looking back at the two events they surely bring to life the problems we may face in the event we need to dispense a lot of ammo quickly at the hoards of zombies .... The Camp McCain shoots have proven to be a good testing ground for both weapons, ammunition, and accessories.

Share with us your lessons learned for either of two Camp McCain shoots!!

MAIN LESSON NUMBER ONE ! ! !

The AR-15 MUST be cleaned and lubed. Mainly a CLEAN chamber and lubed bolt carrier.

Lesson #2........... Quality ammo.

Lesson #3........... Come with your firearm(s) zeroed for 50-300M. This was the ONLY lesson I passed that day............ Smile

SGF, #3 was my groups biggest issue. We only had time to 'zero' (I use this term loosely) ours to 35 yds before we had to pull the plug and head south and we were still a little late.

#1 was also an issue for me.

I propose a #4......learn the weapon you'll be using. I don't own an AR so when something went wrong it took me a minute. I had quite a few double feeds once the gun got warm.

My main issue was lesson #1. That really fouled up my scores. Nothing like a dirty chamber to grab that case and hold it there. I had to go and get my cleaning rod to ram it out. Happened 3 times.

Also had a slight issue with #3. Rifle was shooting high. I had loaned it out to someone to use in a match and they had changed the sights. At least the windage was on.

Only failure I had was gas block blown fwd. I think this was due to rapid fire and new compensator combination. Set screws backed out allowing loss of pressure. My carbine was cleaned / lubed prior to shoot and about mid day. Sand could very well be issues w/ function. At home firearm was stripped and tiny grains were everywhere, mags included. All in all I am happy w/ my weapons performance. Great proving grounds / barrel warmer.
