Thoughts on M&P AR15-22
I've been thinking of getting one of these. Know nothing about AR's as have only been shooting hanguns and thought this might be a good one to start with for a semi-auto rifle. Ammo is cheap. This would kind of be like my "starter" AR. Would appreciate thoughts from those with experience with it. Thanks much

From what I know, its just about the only AR style 22 that functions like an AR and looks like one...
If I was in the market for one, it would be the one I'd get

I looked real close at one before I ordered my CMMG .22 too much plastic for me. Can't change the handguard or the butt stock they are made to the upper and lower. Reading around rimfirecentral and ar15c.om some peope have had them fire out of battery and blow the extractor and chunks out of the upper. Something to do with the hammerspring being too strong. I passed and went with a upper that was steel.

I was under the impression that these were one of the few real deal AR feel 22's
Guess not...Yep Polymer....
I shoot Polymer Glocks, M&Ps, XDms XD's that have a lot more pressure and velocity than this gun will ever suffer...I'm not sure I'd worry about it too much

They were only $400 or so when I saw one...
I'd take a chance

It feels like a plastic AR:lol4: , really light. Some people have not had any problems out them, JoeS loves his. I just wasn't going to take the chance of buying a $500 grenade. You can get a CMMG complete rifle for the same price and you can put a centerfire upper on it.

How does a 22 turn into a grenade...we talking the ultimate weakling of a rd here...
Bubbat's is probably the best way to go if you want the best of both worlds
I got AR's to be AR's and 22's to be 22's

Have access to one for training and I love it. Cool gun and cheap to shoot.. On the flip side you can get the M&P sport for $599 and get a .223. Add a cmmg 22 conversion for $200 and you have the best of both worlds for around $800.. Speaking from experience - The M&P sport is a great gun. I have access to many different AR15 and M16 and for the money you can't beat it.. The lack of forward assist and dust cover is not needed for me..

Well maybe a cherrybomb..
Chunks of polymer stuck in your face probably hurts tho._________________

Appreciate the feedback and insights. Now more to think about, but still leaning towards the getting one. Would still appreciate others feedback if you own one. The CMMG idea sounds interesting though. Is it difficult to convert ?

If you already have an AR just pull the pins, take your .223 upper off and put the .22lr upper on, slap in the .22 mags and start shooting. CMMG does make a coversion where you take out your .223 bolt and put in a .22lr bolt an just use your .223 upper.

I have to go with bubbat. Slapping on the dedicated 22 upper is easy and you still have your regular AR lower.

Thanks - Seems simple enough to do a conversion with a .22 upper. If i decided to go with a regular AR, and get the CMMG conversion upper for .22, what AR's would you recommend ?

Re: Thoughts on M&P AR15-22
dpms, stag, or s&w would be good places to start when it comes to an AR. I have a dpms oracle and its the only gun i've ever owned with absolutely ZERO malfunctions in any way, shape, or form.
I'd go bubbat's route and get the dedicated upper to save yourself from having a really dirty .223/5.56 upper, and worn out barrel from all that extra shooting you'll want to be doing! not sure how many rounds of .22 it'd take to wear out a barrel, but its just something extra to think about. and then later buy or build a lower and just have yourself a dedicated .22 AR. Wait for one of the next Plumcrazy lower group buys on here and that might be a good option since its a complete lower and very very cheap
in all honesty, a semi-retarded monkey could change out an AR upper, so it really is as simple as BubbaT said, he's not

It's not possible to wear out a barrel with 22 rimfire, however 223 barrels have the wrong twist and are a couple thousandths larger so accuracy is dismal.
If you are looking for a match grade 22 upper, go with Compass Lake. I've heard from different sources they will put 10 rounds in the size of a dime at 100 yards with wolf. However they are not for the light wallet crowd.

Accuracy Speaks may still make them too.

Re: Thoughts on M&P AR15-22
Just my two cents on the M&P 15-22...I bought one when they first came out. I liked it, at first! It was a lot of plastic. It does mimic the AR platform. The first trip to the range, it was working perfectly, couldn't get it to jam. The next trip, it was jamming all over the place. I mean, bad. Everything was done the same, all the ammo was the same as the first trip. I couldn't figure it out. I got rid of it. The new owner was told of the problems but still had to have it, the very next gun show, I saw him with a sad look on his face and the rifle on the table. Maybe they've re-worked them. I don't think there is a recall. I wish it would of worked, that first trip with it at the range was fun! It was accurate too. I'm leaning more towards a dedicated .22 AR now, rather than a mimic.

Thanks for the correction. I'd never heard if they would wear out from a .22 or not so that's great to know!

Re: Thoughts on M&P AR15-22
S&W is fixing all the 15-22 by changing some springs and making adjustments to the rifles, if I am not mistaken they pay for shipping both ways and have about a 2-week turnaround. Check out S&W Forum, they have a section just about the 15-22. I was going to by one when the first came out and change to the Remington VTR. Does not look just like a AR15, but a lot less problems.

Had mine for about 4 months with about 6-7k rounds through it. No problems, a few FTF but nothing major. Kids love shooting it too. Fun factor off the chart. Get one!
