I don't think you can go wrong with most any of the larger name. I wish I had waited and bought a colt but am also happy with my Kimbers. If our into putting money into guns the Custom/Stainless II or an SA Loaded seem like great buys that need only a little work to be awesome.

The Springfield LOADED is a nice weapon. I have a Springfield Range Officer just for using at the range and I love it! I have owned a couple Kimbers. But I just don't see spending that much for a 1911 when there are other brands that are just as nice or better for less.
But you are the man with the want & money. Get what you can't live without.

Re: been lookin at 1911's....need some opinions
most 1911 have great triggers, as compared to other non 1911 pistols. Kimbers are fine, You can have a gunsmith tune the trigger to fit your personal taste better. There are some good 1911 smith's in MS.
I prefer a colt over other 1911 although i have had 7 or 8 kimbers and they have all been good guns. I Still have one kimber in my safe- thanks Beldran
.
My preference is still a series 70 gun and have my smith build it from there. i end up spending more than on a kimber or springer built one, but i do end up with it built just like i want.

4", so do you want a full size frame? or a compact/officers frame?
I have a Kimber Compact CDP II and it is a FANTASTIC gun. It had some kinks in the beginning, but those are fixed now. also had it refinished by Birdsong. the CDP line comes with night sights, as do several others. for most people looking at kimbers, the CDP line is the best bang for the buck, but there are countless others that would fill your 4" and night sights requirement.
heres a whole thread on mine: http://www.msgunowners.com/t11384-dropped-off-some-work-for-birdsong?highlight=dropped+off+some+work+birdsong
i'd offer a test run at it, but wayne county is a bit far out for me...if you happen to make it over towards the jackson area you'd be welcome to try her out.

SA Champion or Kimber IMHO. That being said, take a look at the Ruger SR1911, MSRP is $799 (Although they've been going at around $700 near me or less), they're Series 70 spec, and made 100% in the USA. Big deal for me. I hate how Kimber insists on the Series 80 junk in a lot of their guns or I'd be pushing them more. And SA is made in Brazil.

Oh, and stay as far away from the dang Paras as possible. They're utter junk IMHO. Expensive, but junk. At least the ones I've owned in the past have been.

Agree 100% but series 80(or the II for kimbers) is no biggie to me until it comes to detail stripping/changing firing pin springs, because then you need a 3rd hand

I was raised to be a fan of Colts. I've been through my share. I've got 2 or 3 left, all of them extremely customized. I sold off all the stock Colts--70 or 80, it didn't matter--they all needed extensive work to bring them up to Sig/SA/Kimber quality. I've never owned an SA, and have only one Kimber. I've never found a another Kimber I liked enough to buy, and the same can be said for the entire SA line. I thought they were overpriced for all the refinements and options (on both brands), though for the most part, their triggers were fair to good, with some rare excellent trigger examples. The one quality I objected to most was fitment. Even when I perused the SA and Kimber booths at the 2009 SHOT show, I was generally unimpressed with their slide-to-frame fit. (I guess neither company thought it 'completely' necessary to devote attention to that fit and feel, since it is generally acknowledged that slide-to-frame fit only contributes ~5% towards accuracy....the general belief is that barrel-to-slide fitment quality contributes > 90% of an 11's inherent accuracy, and both SA and Kimber seem to have that down.) Oddly, the Kimber I bought is an Ultra Ten II--it has an abominable reputation for FTF's and FTE's, but mine has run like a champ without alterations from the first day. I wouldn't sell it if I could. Kimber discontinued them rather than service them they were so bad, but mine was an extremely early production, and I guess I lucked out.
I have two Sig 1911's--the XO and a late-model C3. They are fantastic guns, especially for their cost. I've had three C3's--each one was purchased as an aesthetic advancement over its' predecessor; I ended up with a black Nitron slide-and-frame C3. The early C3's are distinguished by the "manhole" cover on the right side of the slide. These early models had some barrel bushing problems that required use of the fabulous Sig warranty (no sarcasm intended). These early bushings were out-sourced and not machined to correct dimensions, causing the barrel to batter the bushing until it cracked. Sig will send a shipping label and repair, inspect and test their gun for no cost. I've had it done on the only early-model I purchased. They replaced the barrel and bushing and tested it, supplying me another target with the warranty service.
Late model C3's (at least the two I've had) and the XO seem to function fine. I'm very pleased with the Nitron finish; after at least 6 months of daily holstering, the one CCW Sig I use shows absolutely no sign of wear. It has held up as well as my Ion Bond guns. (I don't usually carry a Sig daily--I have a true custom gun I prefer, but I carry the Sig as my beater, especially out-of-state [just in case].) All four of the Sigs I've owned rack like glass-oil-glass sandwich; each part is as smoothly finished inside as out; the triggers are consistently fantastic and hover at 4 to 4-1/2 lb, crisp (but not overly so)--a good 'combat' trigger that can be used for target shooting.
I have nothing bad to say about Sig 1911's. Now Para's on the other hand are extremely expensive in my opinion, especially for all the complaints I've read about their performance and warranty service. I've just never liked a Para enough to take a chance, considering their internet reputation.

Re: been lookin at 1911's....need some opinions
Don't get me started on para. The metalurgy is terrible. It's where old pots and pans go to die.
Old 70 series Colts are nice, but mostly are safe queens if you can find one that hasn't been worn out, or smithed on by someone that is a kitchen table hack...the typical fate of one.
Low dollar, but still a good gun: The Springfield Range Officer....We used to have these built up from the basic GI model for USPSA 20 years ago....It cost a whole lot more back then.
Or, if you want to go high-dollar: Caspian frame and slide with a Kart barrel built by world famous Bob Jones.

I agree with Cliff
Para = POS
I've been eyeing the new Range Officer for a while...I trust Springfield to put out a good product
If money were no object...I'd consider a Les Baer....I really like the STI's but I don't shoot well enough to justify having one
Ya'll all know how I feel about the old ponies....
