Stainless steel media $5 per pound

Post by PhillipM on Sun Jun 19, 2011 10:21 am

I found the source everyone else is reselling on a competition forum.

Call them and ask for SCW .041 * .250 - $5 / lb. They are used to dealing with reloaders.

Wet. It is the same price at Buffalo Arms Co., which also sells a bunch of really neat stuff.

It is $7/ lb on buffalo arms site, $10 cheaper for five pounds from the manufacturer, $25 vs $35.

I finally ordered some. $5/lb * 5lb, $5 shipping. So for $30 I should be through buying media.

The biggest PITA is you have to be there when tumbling stops and rinse immediately or it settles back on the brass.

I've had good success using some miscellaneous stainless steel hardware I had laying around, mainly 1/4" nuts and fender washers but, as with BB's, they are too large to clean the primer pockets and inside the case. Not that the inside of the case needs to be cleaned but it may help identify imminent case head separation.

Success! Three hours tumbling in my RCBS sidewinder, a shot of cascade, and a shot of lemishine!!!

Dirty brass

Clean brass

Clean pockets (cell phone pics, sorry)

A quarter turn pass with a primer pocket brush, which is what I'd normally do, did not remove the black stain in the primer pockets, it took some aggression. They are good to go, I just wanted to see how hard the black was to remove.

? for ya. you say wet tumbling, is that just adding the cascade and lemishine or you add water also? also after you finish you rinse it off with water and let it dry or use a hair dryer or something like that? and last one can you use any old tumbler or is it a special one? I need some media but it this will last a long time it makse sense to order this.

thanks

Yes, water is used. My sidewinder's instructions are to fill the drum to the point no water will come out with it sitting in the tumbler. I used cascade because the lid for the sidewinder is a friction fit, if regular liquid soap is used the suds generated form enough pressure to blow the lid off while tumbling! The floor needed mopping anyway that day.

I don't have the setup to separate the media like they do in the video yet. I decanted off as much water as I could, rinsed and repeated then after draining as much water as possible, dumped them in a plastic tub. I shook out the water and media inside the case and put the cases on an old broiler pan then set them in the oven on the lowest setting for 20 min or so to dry. As for the media in the tub, it is magnetic and I have a strong magnet I put in a ziplock bag. The media sticks to the magnet then I pull the bag off the magnet over the drum and the media falls in.

I bought my RCBS 20+ years ago but if I had to do it again I'd get the thumler's model b high speed. The lid is locked on and cost $175 vs $400 for the RCBS. I've no earthly idea why the RCBS is so high now, it was around $150 when I bought mine.
