Beretta PX4 Storm SubCompact vs. Springfield XDM (both in .40 S&W)
Hello fellow gun owners,
I have recently purchased a Beretta Px4 Storm .40 for CCW. I would like to upgrade my wife's CCW but I am at a crossroads. I like the Beretta, but it has several features that I am not fond of, and I don't want to expose my wife to those problems if I can get around it. The XDM seems to address these problems. On the Px4 the trigger reset is very long/full...in fact it must be released to "no pressure" before reset occurs. The pressure required to squeeze the trigger in too much as well. My wife is 5'5" and about 102 lbs, so size does matter. The px4 is smaller than the xdm compact (they don't make a subcompact). I would simply like some honest input regarding this issue based on your experience. I am also open to other CCW options. My wife has to have pride in her CCW or she won't carry it. She has carried a .38 snub for 15 yrs or so. I have carried numerous weapons open and CCW but have settled on my new purchase and thanks to some of you I have discovered Crossbreed Holsters and I am sold.
Thanks,
Joe

Re: Beretta PX4 Storm SubCompact vs. Springfield XDM (both in .40 S&W)
I've shot one of the fuels size px4 storms in 9, and its nice, but I prefer a consistent trigger pull. I own a 4.5" xdm40, and would choose it over the px4 anyday...which seemed to be the consensus view of everyone at the range with me last I went, except the guy who owned the px4. I haven't shot the compact xdm yet, but I'd love one!
I'd trust either though!
Maybe take her to the shop and let her try the different backstraps on both(assuming the compact px4 also has those?) and see which she prefers. Also have her dryfire both. The xdm's trigger is definitely superior IMO, but like I said, my experience with the px4 was limited to one range day and to the full size 9mm version, so take it with a grain of salt

Thanks a lot for your input. You are right, we need to shoot or at least handle an xdm (or any gun) before actually considering it. I have heard such good things about the xdm, just haven't shot one yet. I have held one in a gun shop, but that is it. I live on a farm so I have never been to a real range, just my range. The problem with that is that nobody is ever there except whoever I bring with me. Thank you and I look forward to some more input as well.

IMHO, that may be too much caliber for her size, esp in the compact models.

i voted xdm but id say 9mm. your wife is in the small side and the 40 is a snappy gun.

I vote the XDM out of the two just because I have the 4.5 XDM9 and love it. you are more than welcome to shoot it and im in madison all week working so could meet you up there after work one day. I know it is not the compact but it will give you the feel of the trigger.
I also carry the XDsc 9 on a daily basis and she can try that out as well.
let me know.

I have a px4 subcompact and it's really a nice gun, I use an old faithful holster IWB, hides very well.

Thanks guys! I use a Crossbreed Supertuck, but since buying this gun, well...I'll just say that I have ordered the holster and it is under construction right now. I have been carrying a Ruger P94, but it is rather large, hence the purchase.

I voted XDM and I would say also say a 9mm for the lady. I recently bought the XDM 3.8 compact in 9mm and love the gun. The trigger is sweet and the reset seems to come natural fairly easy. Mine came with three backstraps to choose from, so maybe the grip could be set to her liking.

Isn't the XDm available in a subcompact now? Maybe not...
Thought they had one with smaller grip size than the standard 3.8?
It still gets my vote.

It's called a compact....they keep changing the names of the line. 2 years ago the 3.8" on the full size frame was called the compact

Definitely let her shoot the .40 and the 9mm, she will probably choose 9. Even +p is milder than the .40

i'm 5' 2'' and 105 and have the .40 in the px4 full size, i dont think the .40 is too much gun for her. i LOVE mine, but i'm looking at getting a .45 in the xdm so i'd say that it's really hard to choose between the two. i'd say let her shoot them both a few times then let her pick. both great guns!!!!

How many rounds have you put through your full-size .40? What's your grouping sizes at 7, 15, and 25 yards. What are your shot splits to the 100th and said distances?
And, let's remember the OP was talking about a compact...the smaller the frame of the gun, the more recoil.
Can a lady of her size handle a compact in .40? Sure, she can with enough experience. I've shot with women from all over the country that compete alongside their male counterparts that can get the job done, but they dedicated years behind a handgun training hard to do so.
Re: Beretta PX4 Storm SubCompact vs. Springfield XDM (both in .40 S&W)
My wife got the XDm 9mm full size and loves the gun. The different backstraps really helped her find the right fit for her hand and the trigger on it is nice too. I'd definitely vote for the XDm.
