Registry laws in MS.

Post by TacticalNinja on Tue Jun 21, 2011 7:39 pm

I got a S&W sigma 40ve as a gift from my future father-in-law and was wondering how to go about registering it to myself, that is if I am bound to registering it. Also, some insight to proper mantainence and mods would also be helpful as well.

Mississippi doesn't register guns.

No requirement to register it to yourself. If you just want something to prove ownership, just get a bill of sale from your future FIW.

The following link should help you with the maintance issues ...

Is your father-in-Law from Mississippi? If not you have committed a Federal Crime.

Doug

If he is carrying a firearm that belongs to someone from another state, is that a crime? Or does it become a crime when he tells someone (LEO) it is his pistol? I ask that because I sometimes hold firearms in my safe that belong to someone else who is deploying. I do not carry their weapons, they get them back in the same condition as they were when they left for overseas.

The Law says transferring the firearm is a violation. I believe that means letting them have it. It is probably set up to be able to charge you, whatever the circumstances.

Doug makes some very valid points about transfers....ya'll be smart about it

The Q was about registration...and since we don't know if it was all in the same state...we can't say one way or the other...can we ?

Actually that is not what the law says.

(B1) To whom may an unlicensed
person transfer firearms under the
GCA?
A person may sell a firearm to an
unlicensed resident of his State, if he
does not know or have reasonable
cause to believe the person is prohibited
from receiving or possessing
firearms under Federal law. A person
may loan or rent a firearm to a resident
of any State for temporary use
for lawful sporting purposes, if he
does not know or have reasonable
cause to believe the person is prohibited
from receiving or possessing
firearms under Federal law. A person
may sell or transfer a firearm to a
licensee in any State. However, a
firearm other than a curio or relic may
not be transferred interstate to a licensed
collector.
[18 U.S.C 922(a)(3) and (5), 922(d), 27
CFR 478.29 and 478.30]

(B2) From whom may an unlicensed
person acquire a firearm
under the GCA?
A person may only acquire a firearm
within the person’s own State,
except that he or she may purchase
or otherwise acquire a rifle or shotgun,
in person, at a licensee's premises
in any State, provided the sale
complies with State laws applicable in
the State of sale and the State where
the purchaser resides. A person may
borrow or rent a firearm in any State
for temporary use for lawful sporting
purposes.
[18 U.S.C 922(a)(3) and (5), 922(b)(3), 27
CFR 478.29 and 478.30]

Just want provide the correct information per the regulation. The Original post does not identify the state of residence of the father-in-law.
