kicking around the idea of starting to reload some ammo

Post by butch86 on Sat Jun 25, 2011 1:07 am

i am thinking about starting to buy some supplies and start reloading some. all i really would reload would be 7.62 54 and some 223s may do some stotgun 12 and 20 gauge later on. i am not wanting to drop 4 or 500 bux to start. i want to get just a simple press to start. what would be a good press and all to start out with. i saw a deal at bass pro that had 2 bottles on top one held shot and the other held powder i belive. would that be a decent press to start with?
just looking for ideas to start out with. thanks yall.

I'm new to it also but do know shotgun presse are a completly different than pistol/rifle presses. I got the Lee turret press and the kit was $120 or so. but like I said im new and the guys on here have saved me already.

The set-up you are looking at is for shotgun reloading - From the way you describe it, probably a MEC 600 Jr. I have one and it performs pretty well. Just remember that these set-ups are for shotgun shell only and can not be used for anything else. I, like a a lot of folks, are actually getting out of the shotgun shell loading due the high cost of "lead shot." For field and target loads, I can catch them on sale cheaper that I can load them.

If interested in loading for your rifle and handgun, I would suggest one of the kits offered by Lee, RCBS, or Lyman. The kit will contain "almost" everything you need to get start and they probably range in price from $200 - $400 depending on the manufacture and type kit purchased.

My first suggestion would be to find a mentor -- someone close by that has been reloading for several years and get them to walk you throught he process and introduce you to the equipment used.

For shotgun reloading the Mec 600 jr is a great reloader, i have both 12 & 20ga. i still load all my own shotgun shells, love being able to load #9s with extra punch for doves and baby magnums for all other hunting. As for rifle and pistol reloading i use the single stage RCBS , i still like weighing every charge to wring out the max potential of each round.

witch of these would be better to start with. the lee system looks good from titan and the one on ebay is a RCBS kit. like i said i am just looking at a startin place. my neighbor came in off the road this morning and he said if i get the stuff he will walk my through reloading. so i figure between him and you guys i should be able to get started and not kill myself overloading a shot.

with the cost of 7.65 and 9mm it will not take to long to get my money back and i belive i will enjoy reloading. thats right up my ally.
7,62 54r is 14.99 for 20 at great southern and 9mm luger runs 14.99 to 30 a box. plus i plan on getting a ar in 5.56 and have my eye on an ak in 5.56 and 7.62.

the guy i am getting the M44 from tomorrow called and asked if i wanted a lardge ammo can of 7.62 54 brass said it has never been reloaded. i said shure if i dont use it i know lots of guys here would love to have them.

i hope to get started in the next month or so buying up a kit bulits and powder i am excited to start doing it.

My preference only -- I would go with the Lee Kit ,,,, more for the $$s and it will load anything you desire to load -- just add dies.

A large ammo can of reloadable 7.62x54R brass is a great find!! Latch on to it ......... quickly!! I would certainly purchase a few from ya to offset some of your other cost ...

I would check that can of 7.62x54R brass to see if it is berdan primed. Just because it is BRASS casings doesn't mean it is boxer primed....... You might have a large ammo can of scrap brass..... Sad

I would check on Natchez Shooting Supply and Midway USA websites and look at the LEE Challenger kits.

I have a breech lock lee and I like it. Being able to set my dies and change em out without resetting them is nice. Get a bunch of the breech lock bushings...you'll need em. I also keep one extra bushing for calibers I don't load a lot. By putting the extra bushing into the press you can use it like any other press and screw dies into it.

thanks for the advice yall. yeah i hope the brass is the same as what he gave me yesterday then it will be reloadable. captian if its usuable we will work something out. 7.62x54r is between 85 and100 in spam cans so reloading is lookin better and better. its gotta pay off sooner or later. and i only see these left wing idiots making it go higher and harder to get.
