Miss. Hwy. Patrol S & W 4046
Picked this up from a forum member a while back. Look carefully at the etched logo & number. He didn't really know anything about it. I'd like to know if these were official issue, or what. Hoping someone can fill me in on it's history.
I frequently voice my disdain for the .40 S & W round, but I ran a box through this baby and I may be a convert. The heavy, all-stainless construction soaks up the recoil real well. A guy at work wants to buy it, but I may keep it.

Well I know MHP engraves their guns. They also sell off inventory when they change guns. I can check and see if I can get some info from a friend. Would not surprise me if this was an issued gun..

I have what I think is a 4006 that looks like the one you posted. When I bought it they told me it was an Atlanta police gun but it wasn't engraved. I have seen a few that were stamped. The gun I bought looked very nice. I'm not crazy about the trigger but I can live with it.

I've got a friend who was a Trooper, his issue gun was a 4046. The Glocks in .357Sig they are issued now have the MPH shoulder patch engraved on top of the slide just in front of the rear sight.

4046 is DAO, 4006 traditional double action. Same otherwise.

I have a friend who is a trooper and when they went through the
academy in the early 1990s, they were issued one identical to that
with which they proceeded to set, at the TIME, an all time record
for marksmanship for an MHP officer.

Have some more info to share from someone with firsthand knowledge--a state trooper. He told me these were official issue to all troopers starting in 1994. They were carried for about 10 years, being replaced by Glock .40's for a couple years, and then on to the current Glock .357 SIG's. They were offered for sale to each trooper for around $350 - $400, most purchased them.
Would still like to know what year they were replaced, how many total were purchased/issued, and what happened to the ones that were NOT purchased by troopers.
Many thanks to my "informant", who wishes to remain anonymous. Got to love a mystery.
As much as I prefer all-metal pistols to plastic ones I must say that if I had to tote one every day the plastic would be very appealing. These suckers are HEAVY.

Don't know anything about the gun but I really like the fact it has some state history. I'm not really a collector but I'd have a hard time not holding onto that one!

You say you don't like heavy rifles either but seem to get along with that Kimber just fine, lol! I've got a cousin, a 1066, compact 10mm, that is a great pistol. Once an officer I know was armed with a 92F and I asked him why not a Glock. He said when he needed to pistol whip someone he wanted it to be with steel! Good answer.
I don't know about this case in particular but I know S&W, just like a new car dealer would take in the old pistols on trade for new ones then resell them. I'm not sure if Glock does this or if they would take an S&W on trade.
Here is the ex MHP gun I want, it was on a table at a Jackson gun show a few years ago. The bluing was gorgeous. $17,500

Yep, love to have a Thompson, regardless of origin. I DO prefer heavy handguns over "plastic". Just thinking if I had one on my hip all day and rarely fired it my opinion might change. And the 10 lb. Kimber is on a rest.
