Your favorite load for .223??

Post by shoeshooter on Sun Jun 26, 2011 9:59 pm

Preparing to start loading for the AR. Got about 900 LC cases tumbled, ordered dies today. Need bullets, powder, primers soon. Probably start with 55 grain. Looking for good accuracy at 200 yards from a 1:9 20" barrel. What ya like?

My best right now is a 69CCHP over 23.0 grains of H335. I am working on some 77SMK loads and they are promising so far. My barrel is a 16" 1:7 twist though.

68 gr Hornady Match bullet, 24 gr IMR 4895, CCI Primers and a Black Hills Match case. Very good results at 300 yards. I have a Rock River AR-15A2 NM with 1in 8" twist.

Lots of data on usrifleteams.com but you have to join to see them. Go to forums > national match > the reloading bench.

Any data you get needs to be specific to your twist rate.

Still working on a "pet load" for my .223s. So far I've loaded some with 23 gr. of IMR 4895 with 55 gr. FMJ and Tula primers. I rang the gong with all the shots from 100 yards with my AR with this load, but I'm still tinkering.

Glad to see some "love" for good ole 4895, since I've got about 10 lbs. on hand. Was looking at a couple manuals last night and 4895 seems very close to Varget in load and velocity.

No decision yet, however. Keep the suggestions coming.

This one or almost the same load with 62gr and H335.

I've got some 55gr with 26gr of 4895, haven't tried them yet though.

I stop tryin for all out accuracy with the ARs.
My blasting load is 25gr wc844 with pulled 55gr fmj in the 9 twist.
My deer load is 75gr otm wc846 24.5gr in the 7 twist and its on the line. I get light swipes on every case. But it does a good job out to 300yds.

I got bolt guns for small groups. If i can hit a armadillar at 100yds then thats plenty. And my ARs get used and abused, always check zero every other week cause they get bounced around on the 4 wheeler for hours at a time.

I have 3 other loads written in my book ill have to get them next time i go in the reloading room.

This is some loads I have used in my S&W M&P 1/9 twist 16" tube.
Small pest eradication:
Sierra 40 gr. bltzking #1440 w/ 26.3 gr. B/M.
55 gr.Bltz# 1345, 55 gr. SBT #1365, 55 gr. Bltzking #1455 w/ 24.4 gr B/M " or " 26 gr Varget.
The 40 - 55 gr are on par w/ any small projectile load. try setting up a piece of scrap metal 1/4 thick @ 50 yards with some type backer small pc. plywood or other solid surface. the projectile will penetrate the plate and explode all over the backer the same as it does inside small targets. Note set this up in a "SAFE" area.
60 gr. h/p #1375 w/ 23.9 gr. h322. Have loaded maby 200 of these, not enough to really know but accuracy is good.
Barnes:
45gr bnd spit 24.7 grns B/M, This is a solid copper projectile that is extremely pinpoint up to 200 yds, although no expansion.
Barnes 50 gr varmit grenade & Barnes 55 gr. mpg w/ 24 gr Varget good accuracy absolutely explosive on small stuff.
Barnes 62 grn tsx bt w/ 24 grns varget. This is for the heaver stuff. with enough powder to drive it excelent straight line penetration, no fragments and penetration to the vitals. In my openion only I wouldn,t use this load for a home defence load as penetration to adjoining rooms may be issues but for a game getter it's tops on my list

I have loaded Most all the Hornady stuff w/ good results and have loaded 100 Nosler 50 gr. to shoot at McCain. they did great accuracy wise but no terminal preformance tests to date. I keep my weights below 65 grns and my stick shoots all w/ acceptable accuracy. Absolutly zero problems getting on kill zone @ 200 yds.w/ eotec 65/1 red dot and Harris b/p.firearm is adaquate @ 300, but magnification issues start cropping up there for bullet placement.
These loads have worked well for me although I tweek them to particular situations. If I need more power I go to the 6/8, excelent deer round, or dpms lr 308,great thumper and proven good on paper out to 600. Most have came from specific manuels but caution is the word of the day as even a hotdog or a cup of coffee can be misused.
Hope this helps.

I really like XTermimator powder. Case capacity in that little 223 is a bit of an issue. XTermimator has very small ball granules so it's easy to work up a hot load without compressing the powder. There are a lot of great choices in 22 cal bullets. You want gave any trouble finding one for just about any job. I've found that accuracy in my AR is determined more by overall length of the bullet than anything else. I have to get the bullet pretty close to the land in order to get good results. Just tinker around with different charge weight and OAL till you find what your rifle likes.
