Hosters for Glock 19...opinions please!

Post by inthe10ring on Wed Jun 29, 2011 10:56 am

I'm looking to purchase a carry holster for a Glock 19. There are soooooooo many options out there. I like the security of the ones with a locking mechanism, but not sure if that's wise (may cause problems when drawing in a crisis situation) and/or really necessary. I want one that carries comfortably, on the belt, and not an IWB. Any preference on leather vs. other materials?

Does anyone have any advice on the holsters available?

The blackhawk retention holsters are pretty handy if you can get over the kydex...the release is perfectly placed for your index finger.

If you desire a retention holster...its the way to go probably.

As a general rule, i prefer leather

whatever you get for a Glock...make sure it covers the trigger if you carry with one in the pipe

Leather is no doubt more pleasing to the eye, but from a long term durability and re-holstering standpoint, Kydex or injection molded is king. For leather, everybody on here has their favorite leathermaker, to me it would come down to what i'm willing to spend. For kydex, I have personally used comp-tac. They make a good solid product, they have quick turn around time (and for a glock 19 some places probably have those in stock ready to ship). If you wanted to run a weapon mounted light, I would steer you in the direction of Raven Concealment (www.themalabarfront.com) or Peter's Custom holsters (www.peterscustomholsters.com) or JMC holsters (www.jmcholsters.com). All three of these places make good kydex stuff, but be prepared to wait. Comp-tac apparently has also started offering holsters for glocks with weapon mounted lights with quick turnaround time. I have no idea how closely they fit though. I can say that Raven, Peters and JMC make a very close fitting holster though.

I'm personally waiting on a raven concealment rig right now.

Let me say this though, if the holster you buy requires either a retention screw or a thumb break strap, then you need to get rid of it and buy another, because it is not fit properly. There are too many superior makers out there who's product is fit well enough that it requires no retention devices to justify settling for a substandard product. You're liable to spend $50 or more on a crappy holster, when you could spend $70-80 on a excellent holster.

Expect you stock Glock plastic sights to not last very long using a Kydex holster

First thing to go for USPSA shooters using Glocks and Bladetech are the plastic sights

We all know the stock Glock sights suck anyway

I use the blackhawk serpa cqc holster. Never have any problems with it nor the glock sights. I guess i could have problems with the sights if i were shooting comps and drawing thousands of times. But for edc, its dang near perfect and for a reasonable price < $40.

For OWB carry I used a Bianchi black widow. It is low profile, and carries the gun high on my belt. For OWB carry I used a pancake holster that I traded a guy on here for a while back. Can't remember his name, though. Sad

You KNOW I have to weigh in on this one... bouncing smile

I make leather holsters & just recieved a Glock 19 Blue Gun, so I can hook you up. If you order a holster from me, I will throw in a free single mag pouch for being my first online customer. Check out my site at www.customconcealmentsystems.com & look at some of my work. What you see is NOT all I make, but I think you would like the holster that is the background image on my homepage. Click on "Page 2" to see more. That holster is a variation of an old Milt Sparks design used to be called the RoadRunner. It is the highest-riding OTB holster available, as far as I know. If you have a certain design in mind & can't find it, contact me & I will custom make it to your specs. You could have the holster of your dreams & I will name it after you! Heh, heh...

Check it out & LMK what you thing. & the man is right about thumbreaks & retention screws. If the holster needs one, you don't want that holster.

Even if you don't want one of my holsters, good luck in your quest! Also, the Serpa is hands-down the absolute BEST of the synthetic holsters out there-- BAR NONE!

I use a Galco leather concealed paddle holster. Snug fit with nothing to release. I use this in IDPA also.

Hey Chris, I'm going to disagree with you on this one (at least part). Obviously anything leather with a retention screw typically isn't quality, but a thumb break is a completely different animal. Whether it be person reasons or the fact that most police departments require some form of retention device a lot of people like the use of them. While it may not be necessary the thought of writing off anyone who uses them on their holsters would knock out an awful lot of leather men. If it's what the user is comfortable with and causes no other harm - why not?

I'd recommend giving Lobogunleather a call, Ray has given me a LOT of assistance getting off the ground with leather work and really does high quality work at a VERY reasonable price.

I only meant if the thumbreak is necessary to keep the gun in place before you pull it out. I have carried thumbreak holsters in the past, but don't want one for concealed carry. Hell, I MAKE some holsters with thumbreaks. I wouldn't have (or make one for somebody else) a duty holster without one! Just saying that if it needs a thumbreak or tension screw to hold the gun in place, the holstermaker hasn't done his job. See the first line you quoted from me-- If the holster NEEDS one... If somebody Wants one, that's a different story altogether. Not hating on thumb breaks in general, just saying...

Best one in my opinion is the fobus evolution paddle... It came with my glock when I bought it from a private owner and thinking I wouldnt like it I never used it... Tried out some other holsters and couldn't find one that I liked so for s**t and giggles I tried out this fobus and by far it's the best one that I've found... Haven't tried the blackhawk for a glock yet but I'm thinking bout getting it to try it out.

I love my Bianchi 105 leather. It holds the gun nice and snug to the body and is my main carry holster. It has a retention strap that you can use or not. It also fits many different guns. Product number 12954. Price is not bad and it is a very nice holster.
