Re: .22 semi-auto rifle suggestions?
Ruger 10/22s are very popular and good solid guns. But the Marlins, Savages, and older Winchester 22 autos are plenty accurate. If you buy a used one, I would work the action and shine a light into the chamber and check the rifle lands. Those Marlin Glenfield 75C carbines are also good little guns,

Gave one of those to my nephew years ago when he got old enough to shoot...they ARE sweet shooting, at least mine was. Mine was a bit shorter than that one though.

No.
If you want accuracy I think you're going to have to think about a bolt action.

Savage Mark II TR (magazine fed) can be had with some dickering for $400 OTD. It's accuracy is rivaled only by the Kimber 82G (single shot).

Head and shoulders above the Ruger. Ruger is a great gun to tinker with but the 552 is an heirloom quality weapon. It doesn't look like a kid's 22. It looks, feels and shoots like a man's rifle.

M&P 15/22 or Ruger 10/22
It's true that bolt will almost always be more accurate by laws of physics. It is also the 'luck of the draw' often. I have 3 10/22's & my oldest one is stock & a serious tackdriver w/ Simmons $40 scope... it literally shocks those who shoot it! That said, for "fun factor" & just a tad more ($450 used) the S&W 15/22 is 25 rnd tactical and very accurate to 50yrds. Sure is a lot of fun to do a 25rnd mag dump from time to time. As always depends on "purpose" of putting a bullet where you want it. just my 2 cents!

Ruger 10-22! No question! Very good out of the box, can be customized anyway you want it. Resale is probably better too, if you decided you wasn't satisfied with it. Contact me.

Ruger 10/22 is probably the way to go. But the Smith & Wesson M&P 15 is a load of fun and just as accurate as the Ruger 10/22. There is a big difference between a 22lr and a 22mag. All you have to do is shoot some game with it and you can physically see the difference. Love the 17 HMR. My Marlin will shoot under an inch at a 100 yds.

If you want to see how accurate your Marlin really is bring it out to one of the F-class matches and shoot in the sporter class.
