45 colt 300 gr primer and H110 question

Post by Tennjed on Sun Jul 10, 2011 10:29 pm

Guys i bought some 300 grain speer sp and 300 gr hornady hp-xtp bullets (45 colt).

For the Speer my manual calls for 21.5-23.5 gr H110 with CCI magnum primers.

All I have on me are Winchester Large pistom primers (that are marked for standard and magnum.) Will it be ok to use the WLP with this data?

Also the Hornady data calls for 17.9-21.7 grains of Win296. I have heard that 296 and H110 are basically the same powder.

Will I be ok using the Win296 data for the H110 with the xtp?

One last thing. Does anyone have experience with these loads? I will be shooting them out of a New model Blackhawk 4 5/8 barrel.

Thanks

The WLP will be fine for this(some say more accurate than the CCI Magnum).

With both of those bullets, I'd use 22.0 gr of H-110 as a start load and not exceed 23.0. I personally use 24.0gr of H-110 with both 300gr and 325gr in my 45's, but I shoot cast so I'd drop a grain for the jacketed stuff.

You are about to find what so many know about the 45! Hang on tight and get ready to forgo your 44's. Here is a bit to look at on heavy loaded 45's from the man himself.

Your front sight may be a bit short as this is a common problem on 45 Blackhawks. I used to order a .595" sight from Brownells and replace the factory, but have since tried soldering a piece of 1/8 key stock on top of the factory sight and found that it is easier.

Here was the idea on a pic. BTW, the pic shows an original sight in my hand and the .595 soldered on the barrel.

And here is the finished product before final shape and bluing.

Heavy bullets and H-110 shine in the 45. Here is a 30 yard and 90 something yard group with one of mine that shot well after a few mods.

Also, make sure you mark the case heads with a sharpie or something so those loads never see your Colts or clones...
