586 Range Report
I finally got to shoot this Saturday evening - needed a towel just to dry off! This gun is more capable than I am - all shots were fired off hand at 20 yards with a mix of 38, 38+P, and 357s. I'd like to work on my groups as using the 'snap cap' method I've noticed I have a bit of a flinch. Now to decide whether to use it or sit it in the back of the safe......

I'd hate for it to sit in the safe. Just drop it off here.

From your target, I think he's well past dead. Safe or shooter, well, that's a personal question you have to answer for yourself. IMHO, if a gun isn't shootable, it's fairly worthless to me. I can admire collector guns from afar, but most are way out of my means, so I just satisfy myself by living vicaroiusly through you guys.

I can't own a gun and not shoot it (minus my Colt Navy, that IS priceless). The real question is to carry or not carry - she sure shoots a lot better than my 66. I know where a very nice 4" 686 is that would carry/wear well though.......

That one is pristine. I might consider getting the other to carry, if I had the funds to do it. It can always be reblued, but you know it's gonna get some wear from carrying. Might make more sense to carry that one in a case. I'd still shoot it, though.
It looks like a darned fine shooter and it's beautiful to boot. What more can you ask for?

I expect to receive a text from you Eaglestroker the next time you come across a deal on one of those.

I'd have to sell a lot of leather to buy another right now LOL. I'm on the 3-4 month plan if I get lucky! She's tucked away in a gun sock so no worries there - you talked me out of carrying it.

Where did you find a deal up here? I think I saw one of those at Hunter's Hollow, but I've never seen a deal from them.

Yeap.... that 586 needs more trigger time to reduce that group.....
Shoot a BUNCH of 38spl and save the 357s.

Tell me about it.... it was also my first time shooting with both eyes open, so I'm fairly happy with those results. Need a few weekends of practice now...

Next time you shoot it, try very hard to focus on the front sight instead of the target and you may be surpeised to see your group shrink drastically providing you have good trigger control. From the looks of the target, your focus was on the target and not the front sight, IMHO.

Re: 586 Range Report
You're also not going to get the best groups with the original S&W 'target' stocks. You're pulling the barrel down to get those low shots. Get you some A-Zoom snap-caps in .38 so you can use them in any .38-.357 gun and do some work at home. Most shops can get'em. Most 686's can shoot quite well with the 4", 6", or 8" which I wish I could have bought this past weekend. Haven't seen a 8" 586(actually) since cease of production back about '92. It was gorgeous. ++1 on last post by SMGJody...fade the target out and get on the front sight.

Re: 586 Range Report
I will either throw some Hogues or Pachmayrs on it, I knew that would affect it some because my hands aren't quite big enough to grip them really well. I've been working hard on focusing on the front sight. The groups seem to spread as I fatigue. I'll get some snap caps though thank you guys for the suggestions.
