Shooting impressions S&W 642
I admit being a addicted to the S&W J frame. They do so many things well. Need something lightweight in your pocket to go to Walmart, walk the dog or wear in your summer shorts? Maybe that custom 1911, Glock,AR15 or 870 pump.. will be left in the safe.
With a pocket holster, and a good belt..the j frame disappears in your pocket. It's never too heavy, too big or wont work where you are going.
Until now I had a preference for steel J frames. My old 649 has been a faithful companion for a long time. We wont even count how many model 36's have come and gone.
I took the plunge and purchased a 642. It carries like a dream. At the range the new wider sights are easier for 50 year old eyes to see. At 5 yards with wadcutters its a peach to shoot and easy to keep all your shots on playing card. Shooting one handed right and left handed I never missed the a zone. Stepping up to to +p hydrashocks was a little more recoil and lot more muzzle flash. Firing as fast as I could pull the trigger two handed..all shots were well centered on the target and in a good group.
All I have read about the air weights is how much recoil they have. So i take several pair of grips to the range thinking I would change over to larger grips if I needed to. After 75 rounds I thought the factory grips were just fine.
I still prefer older S&W's but this one is a keeper..

I carried one daily for better than 10 years. Easy to conceal, shoot and maintain. The finish wears on them pretty fast, though. Mine isn't pretty any more, but it will still get the job done. Chosing between it and a model 60, I would pick the 642 hands down.
