marlin 336 30-30 refinishing project
i combined all my picture posts into one so you can see progress all the way through...
ok, i got a 336 a while back with fairly clean metal and solid wood that had a few knicks here and there. my plan is to refinish the wood and sell the rifle. here is what i have started with.
picture is horrible. i will get some pics of the wood before i refinish it. i stripped and sanded it yesterday. then i placed a damp rag over the wood and "ironed" it to get some of the dimples out. some are just too deep and i will have to finish over them, i guess. i dont want to sand it down too much and change the shape of the stock and i am afraid that is what will happen if i try to sand the deepest ones out.

she is a 1980 model 30-30. gonna clean her up good, reassemble and sell it. wood will be finished in tung oil.
i will try and post progress pics as i go. and i will try and use a better camera for the rest of the pics. lol
--------------------------
ok, here we go... have had major technical difficulties today. but here we are...
before

first coat

couple rough spots

kinda dark around the edges...

second coat tomorrow...
---------------tuesday-----------------------
Couldn’t stand it. Added a second coat last night before bed.

Cant see much difference. Gonna do at least one more coat. May add more. Dunno yet.
----------------wednesday-------------------
coat 4. forgot to take pics before the 4th coat went on.
you can really see the two main imperfections in the stock in this pic...

before i buffed the stock out...

ok, little comparo from 2nd to 4th coat...

reassembly tomorrow...
---------------------thursday-----------------
done...
pics make it look a little lighter than it is. i think it is ok for my first go at it...

Good luck, the metal doesn't look too bad and the wood should be easy. How has the others you've done do with the deep spots on the wood? I know you must have run across those b/f.

22lrfan is an excellent one to learn from. Don't eat too much this time, do it for me if not for you.

Joe, you may have a hard time selling it after you put that effort in restoration. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Yup, that tung oil will really bring out the wood grain...have used it on a few stocks. Gonna be too purdy to sell LOL. Or maybe not...just remembered, I sold my last 30/30 a couple years ago.

Lookin' good Joe! Taking a beat up one and making it look nice ia addicting. I stripped three stocks last weekend. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

All depends on the wood bro', I did a carbine stock that had to have a dozen coats to get the right darkness. You hittin' it with 0000 steel wool in between coats? Not on the last coat of course.

No steel wool. Why would I do that?

Re: marlin 336 30-30 refinishing project
An old timer gave me that tip many moons ago...just go over the ones I do VERY lightly, enough to knock off any sheen after it's dried. Supposed to allow the tung oil to get deeper into the wood grain. Then when the last coat is dry, and to your liking, leave it to dry at least 24 hours and it's done...least it works for me.

Preciate that. I'll buy some as I will no doubt need it in the future. You can use that with oil on steel too can't you?

Yup, works great of surface rust without messing with the blueing...long as you don't get too heavy handed.
