Crossbreed alternative?

Post by NotUndeadYet on Sun Jul 31, 2011 4:48 pm

My Dad found this site http://whitehatholsters.com/IWB_Holster_MaxTuck/Home_Page.html They look like another Crossbreed/ Kholster knockoff, but I thought I'd share.

Interesting price point. They've positioned themselves as more expensive than MTAC and (IIRC) Crossbreed, all based on being able to offer a colored kydex option. I've never owned the Crossbreed, but have 3 of the MTACs and am satisfied with them.

Anyone that owns a Crossbreed AND an MTAC (or Whitehat) want to chime in with a comparison?

Over on 1911forums.com about every month or so someone will chime in with a remarkably similar story about how amazing whitehat holsters are, especially because you can change out out the kydex pieces.........

Think about it..........what possible reason do you have to need a colored or patterned piece of kydex while carrying IWB?!?!? It's just a huuuuuuge gimmick

Also, I, for one, am not going to take the time to change out pieces of kydex every morning to fit whatever gun I want to carry that day. I'd much rather have multiple holsters believe it or not.....

Not knocking the brand, but since they seem to offer no useful improvements....I'll stick with my Crossbreed

Hmm. I think I like those Cleveland holsters too.

Jake, I never thought about changing the kydex out every morning depending on mood, I was only thinking about Crossbreed's tremendous wait time, when you can have a new kydex holster to put on your leather that's already been broken in within days instead of months.

I apparently have the step-child of carry pistols, no one seems to make a kydex holster for it, and while there are
"similar" models, I'd rather not spend the shipping costs to find out if it's close enough. I will say one thing about the White Hat guy, I got a quick email response, and if I ship him my pistol, I'll have it back within a couple of days.

Hmmm. I didn't know Midway carried Crossbreed. They look to be out of stock of alot of models. Carrying on my person throughout the workday is problematic for me anyways, I have a Maxpedition Colossus bag that I carry as the situation dictates through the day, and an OWB is sufficient for the rest of the time.

As a side note, this holster discussion got the wheels in my noggin turning, and I called a couple of places about having a replica of a pistol CNCed out of aluminum or plastic, just to have to send off if I ever want a kydex holster made. That's price prohibitive, as I suspected it might be. So, I googled mold making supplies, and it looks like I can get the silicone and the resin to make a cast for about $70. Might be something worth my time to play around with.

Can you not buy a blue "training" gun for your model?

Crossbreed Alternative

Post by 228clay on Tue Aug 02, 2011 10:45 pm

Google Tommy Theis holsters. He is from Ark.. Same warrenty as CB and $65 for horsehide. I have both and while the CB is a good holster, I find myself using Tommy's more. The leather on Tommy's is not as thick as the CB. He also is easy to get in touch with (returned an email I sent at 930pm the same night, answers his own phone). It took me 5 days to get one from him and seven weeks to get the CB.

I agree, but its cool to be able to customize your holster if you wwant to. We spend a lot of time and money customizing our guns. For me personally, I woud just want plain black. But the cammo is actually pretty cool. I could see where switching the kydex would be very useful. If I sols my gun or got another one, I dont have to get a completely new holster. Jsut switch em out. Neat product.

I have a crossbreed for my LCR and one for my both of my XDM's and love them both. What turned me off about MTAC was the plastic clips instead of metal and that you could not fit a XDM compact 9 and a XDM 45 in the same kydex MTAC holster.

welcome to the forum welcome

i understand your point about customization............but honestly.....its an IWB holster, who is going to see it? OWB? SURE!!! customize away! but this is like spending $400+ on a exotic skinned IWB holster that no one is going to see......its 100% gimick.

now as far as changing out kydex....I can see where you're coming from if you sell the gun, buy a new piece of kydex a bit cheaper than the whole new holster, but like I said, as far as changing out just because you want a different color, or you decide to carry a Desert Eagle instead of a LCR that day....why in the world would you go through that much trouble to change out the kydex? its worth the extra money to me to just have extra holsters on hand for different guns, instead of remembering to swap out kydex every morning for my chosen gun for the day.......just my thoughts

My Dad got his whitehat holster in Labor Day weekend when I just happened to be there, and it seems pretty well made. I've never seen a crossbreed or kholster in person, so I really don't have a point of reference. He's in a wheelchair, and has found this new holster to be the most comfortable thing he's found, I'd imagine the same could be said about any of similar style.
