I see you live in Purvis. Go to Gander Mtn in HBurg and look at the barrels on display against the gun-smithing wall. The barrel done in Black-T has a scratch on it. I did that with the dull side of my knife. It's "just paint"... yes, blasphemy according to Black-T proponents. The scratch doesn't go to the metal, but I didn't try to strip the finish with the sharp edge of the knife.

I'd suggest Ion Bond. I dropped a file on my 1911 slide from the shelf above (15" drop). The slide was the lone metal object on a 2'x3' anti-static mat (like neoprene). The ringing metallic sound was distinctive. Not a mark on the slide. After 2 years' carry, the sharp edges look like the gun has never been holstered.

The Birdsongs make no claim that their finish doesn't wear in high wear areas. I don't deny that Ionbond is a good finish, but saying that Black-T is "just paint" is simply inaccurate. You can wear it down to where it appears to be bare metal, but that bare metal will never rust. Furthermore, if it was just paint then people wouldn't be landing helicopters in their front yard to drop off machine gun parts, Seal Team 5 wouldn't have left one of their MK13 sniper rifles with them to refinish, and Springfield Armory wouldn't send 60 in the white FBI pistols at a time for them to finish prior to delivery to the FBI.

I can understand that to some, the fact that it shows wear bothers them. However, no finish is impervious to wear, and no other finish that I know of, continues to protect the metal after the color has been worn off.

I would go with hard chrome....I Know guy who's STI Executive sat in Katrina mud close to a month. All he had to do was replace the guts that weren't hard chromed and he was back in business. Now his blued STI that he saved has huge pits in it actually more like creators, it ugly a hell but still runs like a champ. I think he told me he found his blued STI after a week or so.

Exactly!

Toughest color? Probably not.....but it'll hold up to most bangs and bumps

Best protection for your gun available?!?!? Most definitely!!!!

It has a lifetime warranty also in case you want to have the gun recoated at any point!

I'm not going to get into any poo slinging over black-t. I've had the opportunity to see a lot of Birdsong's work. Some recent stuff and some that had been well used and carried for years. They do good work. People like it and it seems to hold up well. However, I have no first hand knowledge about the chemistry or just how tough it really is. It's hard to argue with their reputation though.

With that said, I can offer an alternative. We're in the Duracoat application business with parkerizing soon to come. If you're interested just shoot me a PM and I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Look up a company called Ion-bond. There in North carolina. They have a finish called B4C boron carbide. They are an industrual shop but will do guns. Boron carbide is harder than a metal file and only 2microns thick. It also is super slick and holds oil like park. The untimate finish.

Google it and i think you will be impressed.
