What's your 44 Mag load?

Post by Caleb C on Wed Aug 10, 2011 10:14 am

I've got a 44 mag that I'll soon start hand loading for. It's a handi rifle with a 16" barrel. The loads will be used for close range deer hunting. Hogs will also be targets of opportunity. So, what's your preferred load and bullet type? Any experience with H110 and leverevolution bullets? What's your take on magnum primer versus standard LP primer loads? Is crimping a must even when firing from a single shot? Any real world experience with maximum effective range?

Any info would be appreciated.

I'm watching this thread for my own interests. I like the light loads in my Super Blackhawk, but need something for my Lever gun.

I was counting on you seasoned veterans to hook me up with a hot recipe. I didn't know your hands had gotten soft as they've ripened Smile

Last ones I loaded up were with a 320 gr. wide flatpoint bullet and 17grs. of Accurate no. 9 powder...close to a max load. My friend was shooting them out of a Redhawk and a model 29. Said they shot real well.

Nosler 300gr JHP, 20.25gr H110, CCI350 primer. I've shot hundreds of these out of my Redhawk and Super Redhawk. Will group less than 2" at 100 yards when I don't flinch. This load came from a 1993 article in Shooting Times about the accuracy of 300gr bullets in the .44 Mag.

300gr Cast HP over 22.0gr of H-110.

A Handi Rifle bore may not be smooth enough to shoot cast without leading.

These are the loads I use in my Handi.

240 gr Lee SWC cast from a mix of 1/2 WW and 1/2 Linotype on top of 21 gr 2400.

200 gr Hornady XTP on top of 28.5 gr H110.

220 gr Barnes on top of 28.5 gr H110 with a O.A. length of 1.79. Seating any deeper compresses the powder to much.

lead 200 grain RNFP pushed by 14 gr of Accurate #5. out of a rifle it ran 1559 fps, and out of a 5 1/2'' redhawk it ran 1236 fps. very accurate at 220 yards out of the rifle.

If it won't shoot with any 240+/- bullet with 19 grains of 2400 or 21.5 grains of 296 its time to consider trading it.

300gr's
20gr's MAX of H4227
11gr's MAX of N350
those are thumpers in pistols but should be fine in a little carbine. Crimping is not really critcal in a single shot but my general rule of thumb is if the bullet has a crimp groove then i crimp no matter what. I use Winchester LP primers which can go regular or magnum
longest shot to date with the ol 44 has been about 80 yards a pig.. bullet passed through left shoulder an out right rib cage.. i say it still had plenty of gas left!

p.s.... leave the loserlution bullets alone

Really? Is that some of that new "fuzzy" math that our elected leader are using these days?

You had bad luck from the Leverevolution? I was leaning toward trying these to get a flatter trajectory. Maybe it doesn't really matter though. Most of these loads will probably hold up past 100 yards in a 16 inch barrel.
