Stupid things people do with firearms

Post by Doug Bowser on Sun Aug 14, 2011 1:05 pm

The worst one I ever saw was a guy I worked with. He was installing a gas stove and needed a 1/4" hole in the floor. He decided his Ruger Blackhawk was .357" and that would suffice. He leaned in behind the stove with his head between the tin stove and the wall and placed the muzzle of the .357 Magnum on the floor. When he fired the revolver, his head ricocheted back and forth between the stove and the wall. He could not hear for about 2 weeks and he had numerous contusions and abrasions on his head.

I was at the range one day and guy had a 1911 Schmidt-Rubin Swiss long rifle. He was cussing it. He asked me if I would give him $25 for it because it was the most inaccurate rifle he ever owned. I bought the rifle and remaining ammo and put them in the car. When I got the rifle home, I noticed that the ammo was 7x57 Mauser. The fired cases were really swollen and they looked as if there was a shoulder on both ends of the cases. The right ammo made a big difference in the accuracy of the rifle.

I was there when the guy shot the .357 behind the stove. He did so on my most strenuous objections.

Yeah, was it the right size hole or did he have to go to a larger caliber.

Unfortunately, I read about another stupid bastidge who shot a .44 caliber hole through his wall because he wanted to thread a phone cable into another room. I don't know if any charges were filed--he killed someone--his wife as I recall. Supposedly she wasn't supposed to be home.

I was at a gun show in Mobile AL with a table set up and all of a sudden there was a loud boom!! Everyone hit the floor! Come to find out it was a long time dealer and he was showing a guy a 45 and he pointed it up and plled the trigger. That gun had been on the table for a da and a half. The bullet bounced around until it hit a guy in the back of the leg. All he got was a red mark and probably stained drawers. Needless to say the cops escorted the dealer out and he was told to never come back.

I seem to remember the same thing happening at the Jackson Gun Show a few years ago....

I was at a gun show in Covington, LA and a guy had a WW2 Nazi flare gun on the table with about a dozen rounds of loose live rounds of ammo for it. A 10 year old kid came up, loaded the gun and fired it down a row of tables. It did not hit anyone but it set the whole row of table covers on fire. It was a real bond fire. I grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out the fire at my end of the building. Another dealer did the same at his end. Not much damage but the dealer that had the flares on the table was asked to leave and not come back.

I was at the Jackson show when the .38 was fired. I was coming in the rear door with some sandwiches for lunch. A dealer was showing a woman his self defense .38 S&W with shrouded hammer. He drew it and it fired. She had a skirt on and the bullet went between her legs about 1" below her crotch. It traveled across the floor about 2 feet in front of me, hit an expansion joint in the floor and elevated about 2' off the floor, struck a gun safe and went through a table cover and hit the dealer at the table in the thigh. No cut from the bullet, just a big ugly bruise. The cops came, let the guy pick up his stuff and cuffed him for having a loaded firearm in a State Facility.
