Gunsmith Certification?

Post by BigDaddyQ on Mon Aug 15, 2011 12:47 pm

I've searched this site and the internet and even talked to some gunsmiths at the gunshow this past weekend. It seems to me there is no real legit school, there are no requirements to be met classroom wise and all you need is an FFL and a business liscense to become a gunsmith. Am I right or am I way off? I'm wanting to become one and the guys I talked to said they just bought tons of books and kept expanding their library and much was trial and error. He also said don't pay anybody online for and "FFL kit" because I can just get the info from the ATF. I'm looking for a second job to supplement my primary job which offers me A LOT of off time but I sometimes have to go to work in a hurry, so I really need to be my own boss. I love guns and already work on all mine so seems like this would be a good idea. Feel free to weigh in I'll take constructive critisms, opinions, whatever you got to offer.

Thanks all
P.S. first post for me

I can't really shed any light on your question, but I will welcome you to the board!

Thanks. I realized I should have put this in the gunsmith section after I posted it.

"Gunsmith" is a VERY loose term. If you have an FFL and a state tax license you can legally be a gunsmith. What you need to decide is what type of gunsmithing work you want to do. You could start doing some basic repairs with no investment other than some hand tools.
