Buy youth stock or cut down existing stock?

Post by bwechols on Tue Aug 16, 2011 8:52 pm

I picked up a 20ga shotgun to be my "wife's" shotgun. I'll probably use it more than her, but that's another issue. I need to shorten the stock so she can handle it. She's only about 5'. My question is this - is it worth the trouble to try to find a youth stock for the shotgun, or should I just cut down the existing stock? Mainly I'm wondering if the grip area is any smaller, or if a youth stock is just the same as my stock would be if I cut it down.

You could get one of the ar15 style telescoping stocks for it.

If it'll be for her home defense (good choice BTW), cut down the stock unless it's a wingmaster or a BPS. Keep the other part for a spacer. Drill your holes before you cut and it should go right back in line when you do screw it back on.
Best choice is to look for a youth stock so "don't cut unless you must" - my Johnny Cochran impersonation.

Sounds like good advice. I've had problems with butt plates fitting on the shorter stock. I'm sure there are work-arounds, though. I had a youth model 20ga for my son, until he outgrew it. It was a pleasure to shoot with the short stock. Wish I had kept it.

For me, a shorter stock works well on anything but a shotgun I will actually use for wing shooting. Of course there fit is a key to hitting what you shoot at. Anything else and a short stock is just so quick and handy that they just really meet my needs.
That said, I would try and buy a youth stock before I cut one, if there is one available.
