Some of that same kind of
damage happened at the down-south Pearlington range. It looks like part ignorance, part vandalism...just one hole in a plate is probably a "dumb-ass mistake"

If the plate rack has been damaged 3 or 4 times since the last member was caught, the responsible party pays for all of the repairs since the last repair. That way, the plate rack is not out of commission AND when the word gets around the damage will stop and be repaired, but either way the damage is repaired ASAP. Give the BOD, RSO's, and Match Directors the welder's number and keep the welder on speed dial. If a member doesn't want to pay, if they are ever found on the property again, have them arrested for trespassing. Anything else is just a bunch of talk and wasted time typing here. That's the way to solve it. Any questions??? When the club begins to have the plate racks repaired immediately and charge the responsible party a fine plus cost of repair, then we will find out who really wants to be a member and who needs to hit the road.

Oh..... And the "new" plate rack needs painting (flat black & white ONLY) from top to bottom.............
Allow me to rephrase that.............................. DO NOT paint the "PISTOL ONLY" area.

Two ideas,
Has anyone thought about putting up a very large sign offering a 200 dollar reward for information about who is damaging the rack ? Second, why not make the rack where it will not tear it up when it is shot with hi-power ?
Just wondering.

I think to make it hi-power proof the plates would have to be much thicker, probably to thick to fit on the rack.fredfredfred wrote:Two ideas,

I was looking at this http://mgmtargets.com/tstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=9&products_id=66 and it seems to me that in the long run it might be better to buy one of these or to make one out of the same kind of steel. I have a few of their targets and the are not very thick and my ar, ak, and m-1 do not damage them at 30 yards . I would like to see the plate rack working when I go to the range and sometimes making something idiot proof is the best move. I feel the money spent will justify the convenience that all will get from being able to having a functional plate rack.
Then again, just my opinion

Re: Vandals Destroy Plate Rack On 25 Yard Bay At Magnolia...
I'm not against trying out some armor plate plates for the plate rack as an idea, but we may have to change the design of our rack to accommodate them. The current design relies on pipe welded to the bottom of the plate tab. You would not want to do that to AR500 so we would probably need to alter the design so that holes could be cut/punched through the plate tab and then the plate attached using carriage bolts or something easily replaceable to a redesigned mechanism.
The other thing I'd point out is that the MGM rack above recommends shooting their AR500 plates at 100 yards or more. I'm sure it would hold up BETTER than mild steel on the 25 yard line at Magnolia but I'd be worried about spending $2500 (shipping, etc.) on a better built rack and then having someone come punch holes in it with steel core .223 the next week. There are a handful of REAL idiots with MRPC badges scattered out there among all the good members.

So here is a question - what about getting something like this:
http://rangemasterrowdy.com/Gravityplate.htm
and putting it on one of the 50 yard bays or the west 100 in that opening - if we had a "toy" that the AR guys could use - MAYBE they wouldn't keep shooting the plate rack?
Thoughts?

Re: Vandals Destroy Plate Rack On 25 Yard Bay At Magnolia...
It looks like this is a common problem at shooting ranges. I got this email from Memphis this morning.
From: Memphis Sport Shooting Association MSSA NEWS LETTER 9428 Old Brownsville Rd., Arlington, TN 38002 Web Page Established September 14, 1998 "The Memphis Sport Shooting Association, Inc., is the largest sport shooting club in Tennessee." October 2011 Action Pistol Range Issues There has been several issues down on the Action Pistol Range that need to be addressed. First. There has been a couple of members that have shot our steel targets with a center fire rifle. This is EXTREMLY PROHIBITTED! Anyone caught shooting any steel targets with a center fire rifle, or shotgun slugs will be expelled from the the club. Second. The Action Pistol Range needs to be policed after your use of the range. This includes tearing down you paper targets and putting the used targets in the trash. If you shoot your shotgun, you need to pick up your hulls. Third. When there is match in progress, club members may use only the unused pistol bays. Check with the match director to find a unused pistol bay. Thank you for your understanding and compliance. This will ensure no new stricter rules for the Action Pistol Range. - Memphis Sport Shooting Association Staff ========================================================= You're receiving this email because you're a registered user of . According to that guy's site he says the minimum distance required for rifle use on his rack is 150 yards and nothing over 3000fps. I'm not sure if that's "at the target" or muzzle velocity when shooting at a target at 150 yards. I do like the reward idea though. Offer a $200 reward for turning in the vandals/non-thinkers, then charge the people putting holes in the plates the cost of repairs plus the reward?
Edited to add... not sure how you reset a plate rack from 150 yards away without going downrange to do it.

Re: Vandals Destroy Plate Rack On 25 Yard Bay At Magnolia...
If you look its a GRAVITY plate rack - the plates move back but don't have to be reset as they just are reactive.
I think the key is the under 3000fps - at 100 yards I think ar's would be ok....just an idea

The range where the plate rack is is only 25 yards.
I don't think the range would want folks shooting high-powered rifles and such at steel targets at such a short range.
The whole point is to have steel targets that are at close enough range - for the appropriate calibers - that can be reset from the firing line with a rope or lever.
Idiots just need to respect the rules or put their next round through their empty heads.
