8-20-11 Magnolia Hi-Power Match Report.....
I got to the range at 7:30 AM and saw this...................... (NOTE: Scores will come later as I had to leave early and M1GF will send me Relay 2 scores)

These guys that must have gotten there at the Crack of Dawn had all 14 targets almost setup. I got there early to help, but those guys were $hittin & Gettin........... I thank you all for making my morning easier......

Relay 1. 12 shooters (with 2 no-shows).

My setup for Relay 1. My ole AR did well today.....
More on that later.......

This was my biggest surprize today. PhillipM shooting an AR in a HP match. PhillipM is "Mr. Garand"......

Two shooters choosing to stick with bolt-guns. Each with 91/30 Nagants.

My Slow-fire Prone target. My two 5rd sighter targets didn't look that good to me. When I finished the SP stage, fellow shooters were coming up to me telling me I had great hits. I was not using a spotting scope so I didn't know. When we walked down to the targets I was tickled $hitless with my target (189-5X). My ole AR shoots pretty darn good (Blackthorne kit on a Double Star lower with a 6+lb trigger....
).

Between relays we had two types of spectators fly over (geese and jet). MAN, we can draw a crowd.....

Relay 2 on the line. 5 in this relay.

Michael L. One of the few Garand shooters today.

Father & Son team with a Yugo SKS.

M1GF with a Garand. He was giving his M1A and AR a rest today......

Sorry, I didn't catch this guy's name. But I did catch his brass flying......

Richard M. Richard shot his M1A in Relay 1.

Uncle Ralph calling the line for Relay 2.
And last...... but not least.....

My SCORES from today....
Top: 2 Browning HP mags from DMC49. Middle: CMP M1 Carbine bayonet from Captain. Bottom: Lyman 4-C 45cal mold from Doug Bowser (delivered by Zink).
The scores will come later when I receive Relay 2 from M1GF.

Got the scores sent (finally). Thanks for taking the pics, SGF. It was a great day with a lot of shooters. The young man in the pic with the brass flying is T. Yarbrough shooting my AR-15 A2. He and the two guys with the Mosins work with me at job #2. Now T. Yarbrough and T. Olak (the young man in the yellow-orange shirt) both want AR-15s and XD pistols after shooting them later when we were done with the match.
Thanks again to "Uncle Ralph" for calling the second relay and feeding us hungry shooters. Also thanks to DMC49 for bringing some of lunch and water. And also a big thanks to all who helped set up and take down. It is a lot of work to put on these matches, but well worth it when everyone has a great time.

Congrats DerJunge! Dan you were outstanding today too. As for me, I'll quote David Tubb who after losing a match by the x count said, "I'd trade all those x's for one more point!"
I finally fixed my Garand sights, as Doug said, the spring in the elevation pinion is shot.

I had a lot of fun yesterday, definitely coming to the next match! The new (to me) covered shooting positions really helped keep the heat down near the firing line. Thanks for the places in relay one M1GF!

Re: 8-20-11 Magnolia Hi-Power Match Report.....
I still haven't figured out what happened to my rapid-fire prone shooting. I usually shoot within a point or two in rapid-fire as I shot in slow-fire (adjusted back to a ten-round score). By that rule, my RFP should've been about 70-75 since I shot 149 in SFP.
My RFP group was low, but when I went on to RFSitting my group went back to where it should've been and I actually surprised myself with my sitting score -- it's usually my worst of the first three.
I know it's not the rifle or the ammo. Friday evening I went out to my family property where I hunt and fired at 200 yds. for a check sighting. My two final 5 shot groups from a steady rest were a 49-2x and a 48-2x.
I'm embarrassing my poor rifle!

Brutus,
Was the group low? I always tug my shots down a bit in rapid fire, especially with a service rifle. I usually have to elevate my sights 1 to 1.5 MOA to compensate.

I DO know what happened to my RF sitting: I went into prone position, M1GF had to get my attention and I quickly corrected and went into sitting position, had about 30 seconds left and fired all 10 rounds WAY too quickly.

I guess that may have been what it was, eventhough I haven't done it before that I recall. My RF prone WAS low and my RF sitting was back up in the middle of the target where it should be.
I'll have to keep an eye on that.
Gotta work on my standing as well. I'm debating between taking TOO long and not taking long enough. I tried shooting standing a little quicker than I normally do, but knew that I only had about 3 good shots. I had called those and even told Phillip on the way down to check targets that I had about 3 good hits. Sure enough, I had one 10 and two 9's. I pulled several to the left and knew it when I did it. For some reason I was drifting left just at trigger break.
Oh well. Just need more practice, that's all.

"Practice", that's the answer, the ONLY answer. Now if I could just shed this pesky thing called "work" perhaps I could improve. I'm afraid by the time that happens I won't be able to even see a barn at 200 yds., much less hit the side of one.
Still enjoy the heck out of these matches...and they say humility is a good thing. Not so sure about "humiliation".

I'm with Shoe. Practice is always helpful, but like Shoe there is a little thing called work that gets in the way of any practice time that I could have. Gotta figure a way to get in some dry fire practice.

Yep, ol' devil "work" always intrudes it seems.
It's been a long, long, long time since I was shooting 10 meter air rifle in high school and we shot twice a week, every week.
Only school kids have time for that much shooting.

We're trying to "revive" the JROTC air rifle program at our high school, hopefully the Major will start it soon. Der Junge has been bugging him for 2 years now, and I am certified as a coach for air rifle, so I have volunteered to help.
