Solving an issue with a safety...

Post by eric3713 on Sun Aug 21, 2011 5:26 pm

I have a Beretta 9 mm Px4 Compact that I enjoy shooting, however I have noticed that occasionally, when drawing and flicking off the slide-mounted safety, the gun refuses to fire. The trigger pulls as though the safety is on (virtually no resistance), though it is fully switched to "fire". A slight tap or pull on the hammer removes this and the trigger, hammer, and gun then works as intended. This seems to happen more frequently when I've put a few rounds through the gun as opposed to the first couple of shots. It's as if the safety does not "recognize" that it is off when the trigger is pressed.

First, has anyone ever encountered anything like this?

Secondly, how do I go about fixing this issue? As I intend this to be my carry weapon, I am concerned because it is an obvious reliability issue.

I can probably get around to (and figure out) providing pictures if need be.

Seeing as safeties are mechanical, my guess is that your safety lever isn't tight or something like that and isn't fully disengaging your safety. Before trying to take it apart and look though, I would do a search and see if you find somebody with similar issues. More often than not, these problems are somewhat common and there is already somebody else on the internet asking about it, and it might have a response that will lead you in the right direction. If that leads you nowhere, call beretta customer service and ask them. But like you mentioned, get it sorted out before you even consider carrying it for defensive purposes.

My PX4 Compact is my primary conceal carry right now, and it hasn't given me any problems except during a brief break in period. Before I bought it I looked online for potential problems, and the only one I found dealt with too stiff of a recoil spring being used. Good luck and I hope you get this problem figured out.

I would give Beretta Customer Service a call and see what their opinion is. Just my humble opinion.

+1, sent a pistol back to Beretta and they were timely in getting it back. #1 thing in a gun is for it to fire and cycle. Nothing else that matters can't be overcome with range time.

Thats your best/safest option. They may fix it for free.

1. Do not shoot the gun again. Your personal safety may be at risk.

2. Contact Beretta and explain the problem. It being "safety" related they'll want the gun back ASAP before it hurts someone. They will pay for you to ship it to them and back. Ask that it be with FED-EX.

Years ago the Birdsong (Black-T) had serious issues with UPS opening their packages and playing with government guns..... literally.

It was solved quickly when Mr. Birdsong made a phone call to some "friends..."

I won't go into the details of what happened less than 30 minutes later in the UPS station manager's office, but they never tampered with his stuff again.

I had to remove the safety and block from my Beretta one time to install a different sight. This safety has several parts and is finely machined. Check for dirt or debris in the rear part of the slide, where you can see the hammer block, and then lightly oil the rotating block and firing pin extension.

Definitely call Beretta and have them look at it. Being that it is related to the safety, Beretta needs to find out whats going on and fix it. Hopefully it isn't something that happened to an entire batch of guns, but if it is Beretta will be one step ahead of helping others if they have problems with there guns. Who knows, you may potentially save a life if there are other guns out there with this problem. Just my humble opinion. Happy shooting!
