What guns do you have for HD? Where? and Why?

Post by justjoe on Sun Aug 21, 2011 6:29 pm

What does everybody keep near by for home defense? Where do you keep it and why do you select these weapons/accessories to defend you and yours?

I'll start: This is outside of my CCW weapon that way I know they will be there at all times. In my bedroom my wife keeps a Smith 686. I have a .45 with a flashlight for clearing the house and getting to my daughter if need be. I also keep an extra flashlight that way I can shine away from my body in case an armed intruder shoots toward the blinding light. The one on the pistol is basically a backup. If my whole family is already safe in our bedroom I would use a 12G 870 with a light to hold on the door and wait for the Cops to come do their thing. This is where some guys may not agree but I also keep an AK with a light close by. I like having a combat rifle just in case something goes real bad and I don't have time to open the safe and put my main battle rifle into operation.

In the front of the house I keep a .40 or .45 where I can get it it quickly. We also keep a .38 in the kitchen cabinet and one in the front bedroom by the safe in case someone forced me to open it I could hopefully draw down when they go to get in it.

Alot of guys are all about the shotguns but it's just to hard to open and close doors, call the cops, move kids, etc with a long gun. Plus if somebody grab the shotgun we might fight for it but with the pistol there is alot less to grab.

This is just what I've done. Just wondering about everybody else. Hopefully I can learn some things from you guys. I move around alot being in the Army so I always find myself evaluating my security plan. I'll be doing it again soon.

It's just the 2 of us so I keep my Kel-Tek 380 in a drawer close by as well and my 12 ga pump. I keep the 12 ga in the front of the closet so it's handy.

I keep a shepherd on the end of my bed, and a modified 870 in easy reach of the bed. A 1911 serves as backup. Hopefully I'll never have to use any of them, but I always try and manage my risk.

I agree. If my family is safe they can have whatever they want. That is what insurance is for.

Well if they get past the door, alarm, & 2 big labs, I'll grab the 500 turkey gun loaded with #6 (that's the do-all round).. Surefire flashlight too.

I have a S&W .40 and a Mossberg Maverick 88 12 g (18.5" barrel, holds 8 rounds) in my bedroom. Also an old AMT 380.

Never thought about keeping one in kitchen, good idea, near front doors, since bedroom (fortress) is in back of house. Will have to do some rearranging.........

A gun is great to defend yourself and loved ones from an intruder(s), but you can't beat a dog for altering you to trouble and letting the bad guy(s) know you are aware of them, that and the sound of a pump shotgun being loaded scares most, but the biggest idiots away.

with a very active 4yo runnin around the house we have to be carefull. but my highpoint c9 sleeps in the holster i have strapped to the side of our bed. or if i am sick it sleeps under my couch cushion where i am. also have some $60 20 guage with #4shot ( my prefferance in a 20 ) on the kitchen cabinats i fabricated a mount for a flashlight on it. i have a book case just within the front door its 6 foot tall with a old off brand cheap 45 revolver that was my papaws. and several flashlights. my safe is in my bedroom clauset where i have a .32 strapped to the top. my son has been tought about guns since he was about 2 and he is quick to tell me even if he finds a bullit i may have left in a pants pocket. the only one he can reach is the 9mm beside the bed and its put away when i wake up and pulle out when i get ready for bed. i am always trying to better my security in my home. it would be unlikely someone break in our house ( just because of where we live ) no i am not nieve and beleive noone ever will. but if they did i live far enough in the county that i would be the sheriff, judge, and exicutioner if someone broke in. recentlly i put a cheap cctv i got from harbor freight in and outside my shop. and also have radios that my parents and i can contact each other in case someone is tresspassing at night or break in.

when you are in the boondocks ya have to take care of each other. between us and our 3 neighbors we all look after each other pritty good.

A Streamlight Stinger flashlight sits in bedside charger on my side. A pair of cheap but good led lights are dispersed on both night stands. A 1100 model 12gauge loaded with 6's in the crack between the safe and wall, you'd have to move a curtain to get it and place your head against the wall and use a flashlight to see it. My 2 1/2 yo couldn't get to it if he knew it was there and tried but I can get it very quickly. A Beretta 92FS on top of the safe, you'd have to be 6 1/2 feet tall to see it but again quickly attainable. Cary weapons (LCP his/.38 Airweight hers) sit next to it at night.

I plan to get his and her bedside lockboxes with a bonus I get in the fall. I'd keep my carry weapon and the Beretta on my side and like to get a judge for her HD handgun eventually.

I plan to get a Glock 27(or33) and 23C(or32C) soon. The larger of the two will replace the 92FS the smaller would replace the LCP as carry in most situations.

Edit: I've got a beagle/feist mix that would let us know if someone was even trying to get in by raising holy heck!

Me either... I got a Mini Schnauzer and a 16lb Yorkie that thinks he's a Shepherd. lol But just in case they can't handle it, I back them up with a 12ga. pump loaded with #6s and 9mm.

First they'll have to get through the the locked dead bolted doors. Burglar bars are on the windows. Before they could get that far the lab will be raising so much he!! that even the dead would wake. I sleep with my sigma in .40s&w next to my head on the night stand. Rem 1100 12ga is leaned against back wall of my bedroom closet with #5 turkey loads above it on a shelf. if that doesn't work I'll just wake my wife. Even old Lucifer himself would not want to deal with her wrath after being disturbed in the middle of the night.
