M1 Garand Ammo

Post by DevilDog on Sun Aug 21, 2011 6:34 pm

I have a M1 Garand that I got from DCM back in 1991. I got lucky and got a beautiful weapon; it looks like it has never been shot. I know I've never shot it. After observing the match yesterday at MRPC I'm motivated to start shooting it, but need to know what is safe to put through it. Is it fair to say that this from CMP will be alright?

-.30-06 M2 Ball Greek HXP 200 RDS LOOSE IN .30 CAL CAN, M2 Ball, .30-06 Greek HXP (Pyrkal) manufacture
-Hornady .30/06, 150 gr. FMJ-BT, 2750-2800 fps. Range Ammunition
-M2 Ball, .30-06 Greek HXP (Pyrkal) manufacture. Packaged in 8 rd enbloc clips, 6 clips per bandoleer, 4 bandoleers per .30 cal can. 192 rds in a .30 cal can. Boxer primed, non-corrosive.

Also I've seen this commercial ammo:
-Federal American Eagle AE3006M1 / 30-06 150-gr FMJ 2740 fps - allegedly loaded specifically for M1

I may try reloading eventually. For now just need to get some rounds downrange. Can anyone give me a roger on the ammo above, or offer some alternatives?

Looked like a good group yesterday. I'm looking forward to getting out there.

I've shot a bunch of the Greek stuff. Never a problem. Good brass and a good price, especially with the clips

Any of the ones listed above will serve you well ... for the money, the Greek HXP is the best buy!!!!!!!!

At a Magnolia HP match the Greek HXP ammo is only $5/box. But only 3 boxes to shoot the match. No take home ammo allowed.

I have heard the loose Greek 200 round cans can be mixed lots. Buy it in the clips.

The Greek ammo is good and a better buy. Like SGF said, we sell it for $5 a box, but it is for match use only (although you can keep the brass).

Thanks for the tip, Doug. There is an issue with the Greek clips though. At some point around 1970 IIRC they changed the extractor groove in the HXP brass to match 7.62 NATO which is cut wider than .30-06 M2 and modified their clips to match. All works well until the Greek clips are loaded with .30-06 brass which spreads them out more and causes functioning problems.
