Looking for Subsonic .223 and .308 Win. Loads

Post by DMC49 on Sun Aug 21, 2011 10:01 pm

Does anyone have recipies for loading subsonic .223 and .308 Win.? I would like to load .223 that will cycle in an AR using a 16 or 20 inch 1:9 barrel. The .308 Win will be used in a bolt rifle. I have read various sites and forums regarding subsonic loads, but wanted to hear from the local folks regarding their results. Has anyone tried 4.4 grs of TrailBoss with a 55 gr FMJ bullet fired from an AR? Did it cycle and what was the results?

If you get any load info please post it here, I am sure others, like myself, are interested.

HOWEVER, I am sure everyone realizes subsonic loads are very finicky and what works in some firearms very well might not work in others.

It is usually best to try and find a load that barely goes sonic and work down until you find your firearms threshold. This HELPS prevent the STUCK BULLET situation that can happen if you try a subsonic load that is 'too subsonic' and actually does not get the bullet out of the barrel which is a pain in the rear and can be very DANGEROUS too if you shoot another round into a blocked barrel.

While you are working on and testing subsonics you MUST check for a clean and open bore/barrel so you do not put a bullet into another bullet...this happens sometimes to people who do not pay attention.

Getting a subsonic to exit the barrel at the desired speed (950-1050 fps) is half the battle. Getting one to exit at that speed and be somewhat stable is the other half. This is extremely important to consider when using a suppressor. If the bullet is not stable you could do considerable damage to your baffles. To check for stability you should shoot WITHOUT your suppressor first into paper at varying distances, starting close and working out, to make sure you have ROUND bullet holes and not oblong or football shapes which would indicate an unstable bullet in flight.

Subsonic loads will not cycle a standard AR. However I have read that u can move the gas port a couple inches from the reciever and subs will cycle a 223 AR. Of course u could order a 300 blackout barrel and be good to go.

Ive been busy lately and havent got on here in awhile.

I have all my sub loads written down some where. But a good "rule of thumb is to start at 12gr of trailboss in 308. And 6gr in 223. Check the bore tho. Never know what happens. And test without the can so you wont ruin it if you have a wobbly bullet.
